About the profession

The training is conducted at the clinical sites of the Department of Hospital Therapy in clinical departments and laboratories of city clinical hospitals, as well as in the Laboratory of Molecular Diagnostics (PCR) in the territory of the Institute of Medicine and Agrarian Institute of RUDN University. Residency training at the department on the specialization “Laboratory genetics” implies the clinical training of a specialist during the entire period of training. During the first year of study upon the residency programme, a future specialist studies at clinical departments, the laboratory training includes pre-analytics at the pre-laboratory stage. The task of the first year of study is to study the pathogenesis of diseases and the principles of their treatment. Subsequently, based on the general training programme, an individual plan of classes at various sites of the department is compiled, taking into account the abilities and interests of a resident. In the second year of study, residents study in the clinical diagnostic and genetic laboratory, they master laboratory genetic methods and principles of interpretation of results with the formation of a laboratory report and advise doctors of medical specialties on the issues of laboratory genetics.

Training process

The main emphasis in training is not on the ability to work with laboratory equipment (secondary vocational education is usually enough for this), but on the consulting function of a specialist in the field of laboratory genetics. Knowledge of the etiology, pathogenesis and symptoms of diseases, mechanisms of action of medicinal products gives a doctor the opportunity to correctly interpret the results of laboratory research. A graduate of the residency programme will "speak the same language" with an attending physician, which will improve the quality of medical care. In addition, during the training a resident also masters various laboratory techniques.

Internship

Medical residents are distributed to the units of the clinical sites of the department, where, under the guidance of professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice. Students analyze clinical events and this provides the opportunity to obtain a wealth of clinical experience during residency training.

Career

Positions that a graduate of the residency programme can hold are as follows: a laboratory geneticist, a head of a laboratory. In addition to the work in medical organizations, graduates can get a job in scientific institutions that are engaged in preclinical and clinical research of medicines and medical products, for conducting laboratory genetic research.
