About the profession

The profession of a cardiovascular surgeon conditionally has 2 directions: cardiac surgery and vascular surgery. A specialist of the first direction performs surgical treatment of congenital and acquired valvular heart diseases, arrhythmias, coronary heart disease and its complications, and deals with the problems of heart transplantation. This specialist is engaged in the so-called intervention on the "open" heart. In turn, a vascular specialist is responsible for eliminating the pathologies of arteries and veins. His task is to master the skills of reconstructive operations aimed at restoring adequate blood supply to the body. In heart and vessels surgery a surgeon of the relevant direction closely interacts with all members of the operating team – general surgeon, anesthesiologist, resuscitation expert. It may be necessary to cooperate with an arrhythmologist, who is competent for the treatment of arrhythmic manifestations, which can arise as a result of direct interference in the work of the heart.
