History is a science about man. It deals with the study of his activities and outlook both in the past and in the present. Today history is one of the actual and high-demand development lines in the humanitarian knowledge. The programme gives an opportunity to re-analyze the past and find its consequences in the present on the basis of the modern theoretical concepts and to make an impact on the public policy.
The programme is aimed at training postgraduate students in the field of study “Historical sciences and archeology” in the following specialties “History of international relations and foreign policy” (07.00.15); “Russian history” (07.00.02); “General history” (07.00.03); “Historiography, source study and methods of historical research” (07.00.09).
The programme is aimed at training high-skilled specialists able to identify and analyze the basic patterns in the world historical process, special features of development of different regions and countries including Russia, to give an expert opinion on the evolving system of international relations using the methods of comparative, system and multidisciplinary analysis. It is also focused on the development prospects of intergovernmental relations, on taking part in international, scientific, political and public organizations.
Postgraduate students improve their knowledge of a foreign language in order to use it in their professional activities and for communication.
The educational process includes teaching and industrial internship in the scientific and international organizations, mass media, and the leading companies and expert agencies. The post-graduate programme results in preparing and defending a PhD thesis. It is possible to present it to the Dissertation Committee which was set up and is now functioning at RUDN University.
The main focus of the profession lies in the knowledge, capacity for impartial analysis, search for agreement between the opposing social and political and international forces. A modern historian learns both to identify and understand the contents of the documents and to systematize and analyze them and it helps him write his own original texts.
Disciplines: “History and philosophy of science”, “Methods of scientific research”, “Foreign language”, “Pedagogics of higher school”, “History of international relations and foreign policy”, “Historiography”, “Topical issues of general history”, “Research seminar”, “Scientific research”, “Teaching internship”.
It includes special discussions, master classes of the leading historians, taking part in round tables and international conferences, internship in the offices of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Rossotrudnichestvo including internship abroad, in academic research institutions and archives of the Russian Federation. It’s possible to take joint postgraduate programmes at the partner universities (Grenoble University, University of Strasbourg, Shandong University, University of the Balearic Islands). One can complete the internship in the leading world research and analytic centres.
It includes preparation of publications in Russian and foreign titles, preparation and defence of a PhD thesis.
The in-depth study of the methodological foundations of theory of international relations and historical science results in developing PhD graduates’ skills of unsupervised research, creative, international, managerial and teaching activities. It also builds capacity in complying and analyzing different texts, it develops skills of using information and retrieval systems and organizing work of creative teams.
Potential places of employment: international and public organizations, structures of public authorities and administration (of federal, regional and municipal levels); political parties and social and political movements; research, teaching and expert activities in international relations, Oriental and African studies, public politics; foreign regional studies; history of Russia and CIS countries.
