A sociologist earns his living by making research. He usually studies how people behave: how they do their shopping, vote at the elections, work and look for a job, relax, get married and divorced, have and bring up children, move house and etc. Sociologists conduct polls, have interviews, give lectures, write articles, speak on TV, they can plunge into dozens of different cultures. Sociologists know how to study human relations and deeds, how to influence them, how to create a community and prevent a conflict, how to earn money and save time.
A sociologist always has a choice. Some make career in marketing and HR, others succeed in international projects and still others at universities and research centres, in mass media and politics. Some limit themselves to business or academic life, others are in politics or devote their life to solving a social issue but at the same time they continue to be sociologists.
The priority of this field of study is the combination of scientific and research and social and engineering areas of competence of a sociologist. Fundamental theoretical and methodologic training is combined with an extensive cycle of applied social and managerial disciplines which allow to master effective social technologies in practice of running modern organizations.
“Modern methods of sociological research”, “Modern sociological theories”, “Philosophy and methods of social sciences”, “Measurement in sociological research”, “Qualitative methods in sociology: history and methodology”, “Management consulting”, “Modern business strategies”, “Organizational culture”, “Research seminar”, and etc.
Our Master’s programmes are both research and practice-oriented. The subject of almost every Master’s thesis includes making your own empiric research. During the second year of studies students have professional, teaching and pre-graduation internship. Professional internship can be both at university and outside it. Our committed partners are leading sociological research centres of Russia including the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VTsIOM), “TNS Gallup Media”, “Romir Monitoring standard”, International Institute of Marketing and Social Research GfK Russia, etc. The contacts with the potential employers are often established during the internship.
The following areas are industry-specific for the graduates of this field of study: analytical support of management activities, management consulting and strategic consulting, intra-organizational innovations, research into organizational malfunctions e.g. labour conflicts, research into organizational culture, optimization of social and human resource policy of organizations, HR management, PR technologies, etc.
Four years in bachelor’s studies gave me a clear notion of the profession and necessary skills but I also was constantly supported by the lecturers of the whole Department. After receiving my degree I didn’t hesitate whether I had to continue my studies and join in master’s degree course. Now I’m in the second year of sociology of management and social management. During my studies with the considerable support of the Department I wrote a scientific article on the subject of my future thesis devoted to the study and analysis of the labour market of modern Russia for the RUDN University collection of articles. Moreover, owing to the lecturers and my scientific advisor’s commitment I managed to take part in the research «Civil and patriotic education as a basis for spiritual and moral development of the youth» in Volgograd, and to apply my research skills. Not every university offers such diversified forms of professional cooperation. And it should be noted that full participation in a large offsite research in a real group business trip is a special pleasure for a future young specialist.
After studying for four years at RUDN University and receiving my bachelor’s degree in sociology with distinction I had a clear notion about my specialty. I have chosen master’s programme “Sociology of management and social management” for the further development of my knowledge, competence and professional skills. The programme allows to gain the insight about managerial processes and managerial activities in the social area. The programme offers to analyze how an organization (enterprise) works, HR (Human Resources), everything that deals with recruitment policy (HR management), to improve the knowledge in methodology (method of incomplete sentences, Likert scale, Ch. Osgood’s semantic differential, focus group, etc.). And what I’ve mentioned is only a small part of the disciplines under the programme. The focus of our lecturers’ work lies on the student’s motivation and involvement in the studies. Computer technologies (presentations as lectures, e-learning) are used for this purpose. Seminar classes are in the form of a game where students are focused on completing their task. Lectures contain examples based on the lecturers’ practical experience.
It should be emphasized that this programme is designed for the students who already have basic knowledge in sociology. The aim of the program is to move a student forward in his specialty and not to train a specialist from scratch.
The Department of Sociology plays a pivotal role in supporting its students, providing the best conditions for studies. The climate in the academic staff should be mentioned, first of all, the academic staff is a team of high profile specialists, if you look at the academic titles and degrees of our lecturers you’ll see that PhDs in sociology, Doctors of Science, Assistant Professors and Professors work in the department.
I’ve written two scientific articles for RUDN University collection of articles on the subject of my thesis, i.e. area of insurance, and the Department and my scientific advisor supported me in it. The Department organizes various scientific events aimed at giving its students an opportunity to openly communicate with experts on different issues, to have a look at the latest achievements in sociology, to help the students demonstrate their scientific achievements and etc. I, in turn, had an opportunity to take part in the research «Civil and patriotic education as a basis for spiritual and moral development of the youth» and to visit Volgograd, the City of Military Glory where I attended famous monuments of military glory e.g. Mamaev Kurgan, Pavlov’s house, ruins of the Gerhardt’s mill, and to apply my research skills.
I am Nhaga Banuma Orlando. I am a second-year master’s student in sociology, programme “Sociology of management and social management” of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at RUDN University.
For me RUDN University is a place where I acquired not only knowledge but friends, learned how to communicate and work in a team and had an opportunity to get acquainted with people of different nationalities.
RUDN University is a home away from home for me. I’m not only a student but I have been working in International student construction brigade «Meridian of Friendship» (since 2010 - present), where I rose from the ranks to the unit leader. Moreover, I head the voluntary group «Wind of Change», and for several years our voluntary group has been visiting orphan asylum in Moscow and Moscow region and has been organizing charity events for children from the needy and multi-child families in association with “Capital of charity” fund. I actively participate in the International Youth Social and Economic Innovations Forum and I have been a co-head of a working group of Student Associations Development Programme since 2014.
I’d like to express my gratitude to my University for what I am now! I’m very glad that I am studying at the most wonderful university of the world!
I received my master’s degree in sociology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2013. From 2011 to 2013 I worked as a sociologist in Analytic Centre “Video International”, from 2013 to 2015 I worked as an expert in social planning for “Maxus a GroupM company”, since 2015 I have been working as a senior specialist in strategic planning for “Media Instinct Group”. I have been working in media research for over 5 years I regularly publish my works in professional editions. The main areas of my specialization are developing and presenting communication strategies for the clients, market analysis, brand positioning, media preferences analysis, analysis of lifestyle and behavioristic characteristics of the target audience, search for insights, setting communication tasks and recommendations how to choose communication channels and tools, assessment of the efficiency of advertising strategies, cooperation with creative, BTL, digital and other advertising agencies, development and implementation of the new tools and technologies for strategic planning. The main subject of my research which I started to think over when I still was a student is practices of media consumption in a big modern city, factors influencing them and trends of their changes. It’s impossible to think over it without sociology! In 2016 I submitted the text of my PhD thesis. I hope to defend it next year. If you ask me where, I’ll say - of course, at the Dissertation board of my esteemed Department of Sociology at RUDN University.
I received my bachelor’s degree in Sociology in 2014 and embarked on master’s studies in the field of study “Sociology of management and social management” at RUDN University. I acquired a lot of new useful knowledge, completed teaching and professional internship. Very competent teachers, who know their trade, know how to explain even very complicated subjects in lay language and in an interesting way, conducted our classes. I acquired both theoretical and practical knowledge during my master’s studies. Owing to all this I graduated from RUDN University with distinction and found a good job. In 2016 after my graduation I started to work for a large research company “TNS Russia” as an assistant project manager in the department of analytics and consulting dealing with TV measurements. Of course, I am going to lead the charge. My professional career has only started. But I think that I have chosen the right area of specialization. I’m sure that sociology is my field. I’m very grateful to RUDN University and all the academic staff of our Department for acquiring very good knowledge, managerial skills, as I used to be a monitor of our group, and good friends.
I completed my bachelor’s studies in sociology in 2009. Now I’m working as a head of the Department of Occupational Guidance for the Gifted Youth at RUDN University. At work I often have to analyze both numerical data and text information, I have to process primary and secondary information and make scientifically based suggestions and recommendations. My sociological education and the skills necessary for my post e.g. leadership, self-discipline, being able to plan your timetable, studiousness, sense of duty, striving for continuous professional development, help me deal with these issues.
In 2012 I received my bachelor’s degree in the Department of Sociology at RUDN University, in 2014 I completed my master’s degree in the same department. My master’s studies in the Department of Sociology gave a boost to my professional career. I specialized in sociology of management and as I was falling into the subject I chose the professional area I’m developing now i.e. HR policy and HR management. Such disciplines as sociology of management, organizational culture and practice-oriented class activities e.g. trainings, focus groups, internship, helped me choose the area of my future professional activity. At RUDN University sociology students are given an opportunity to take part in scientific conferences, cultivate the skills of writing articles and public presentations. As for me, this experience was very useful in my work. Master’s education in the Department of Sociology is multi-faceted and multidimensional: it will suit those who want to develop in science and who are going to make career in business and in public authorities after their graduation.
