About the profession
Maxillofacial surgery is an extremely important and extensive section of surgery that deals with the treatment of a huge number of pathologies and pathological conditions of the maxillofacial area. Maxillofacial surgery includes several sections and areas, among which are as follows: surgical assistance for injuries and deformations of hard and soft tissues of the maxillofacial area, treatment of inflammatory diseases, tumors and tumor-like formations, as well as reconstructive surgery. Aesthetic and plastic facial surgery is a special area of maxillofacial surgery.
Already in the first year of study, the students are intensively immersed in the profession. Medical residents study a full range of diagnostic and therapeutic measures in the treatment of various pathologies of the maxillofacial area. They learn to conduct differential diagnosis and make treatment plans. From the first day of study, the residents learn to correctly fill in patients’ medical history, assist in surgeries and provide emergency assistance. During the conferences and seminars organized by the department, complex clinical cases are analyzed, and this contributes to the development of the clinical thinking of a resident. In the process of training, residents learn to use modern methods of treatment using the latest equipment and advanced technologies.
After having mastered the skills at simulation courses, the residents are distributed to the maxillofacial surgery departments of the clinics in Moscow, where, under the guidance of the professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice.
The field of professional activity of the graduates, who mastered the programme, includes the treatment of oral cavity organs, damaged teeth, pathologies and deformities of the bones of the facial skeleton, neck and face. Before the treatment of a disease, a maxillofacial surgeon conducts the detailed diagnosis of a patient. This is due to the fact that the area of treatment is close to vital organs and the brain. All this suggests that a maxillofacial surgeon should be a real professional, who can recognize the symptoms of serious diseases and timely treat inflammations and lesions of the maxillofacial area.
