About the profession
Everybody knows the principle of surgical treatment: a surgeon cuts soft tissues to access the lesion focus, performs all necessary interventions and afterwards sows the wound. Did you know that an operation can be performed without cuts? And not just an operation, but an intervention on such complex internal organ as the heart. Such operations are conducted by an interventional surgeon. Do you want to have this profession? Then you should enter the residency programme on the specialization “X-ray endovascular diagnostics and treatment”. As already indicated, the area of the future specialist's activity is the conduct of operations without cuts. The work also includes conducting vascular diagnostics. How do an intervention diagnostician and a surgeon perform their work? A contrast agent is introduced into the patient's vascular bed, which allows examining veins and arteries using X-ray irradiation. In terms of diagnostics, it enables to define hemodynamics in case of heart defects, find the place of blockage of the artery in infarcts, assess the quality of blood supply to tumors, etc.
The educational programme on this specialization is developed for people with higher medical education, aimed at training highly qualified specialists, who can conduct operations without cuts. This work also includes conducting vascular diagnostics. Training is practically oriented and aimed at the formation of system knowledge and professional competences that allow conducting medical activities.
The training process consists of regular practical classes held in city hospitals, regional centers, hospitals. In addition, the curriculum includes lectures given to residents by outstanding specialists. The practical work of a resident consists in the assistance in operations, participation in consultations, the work in a polyclinic, participation in scientific conferences, keeping medical records, the performance of medical and diagnostic manipulations. The training of a resident is directly connected with his/her supervisors and fully corresponds to the work of a specialist. A resident has the opportunity to obtain basic skills in the disciplines at option: hybrid surgery, artificial and auxiliary blood circulation.
A graduate of the residency programme is a highly qualified specialist, who can apply modern high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment and carry out therapeutic, diagnostic, research activities, engage in private medical practice. Upon graduation, a graduate receives a certificate of an X-ray endovascular surgeon and has the opportunity to get a job as an X-ray endovascular surgeon in city, community, district, regional hospitals and centers. Upon completion of the residency programme, the students have the opportunity to enroll in the postgraduate programme on the specialization “Cardiovascular surgery”, which will allow future specialists to hold key positions or engage in scientific activities.
