All the oncological diseases differ from each other. At present conventional medicine offers three main kinds of cancer therapies: chemotherapy, radiation therapy and operative measure.
RUDN University resident medical practitioner Ivad Taraki spoke about an experimental renal cancer therapy when he appeared in the scientific show Science Slam which was held within the framework of the 20th Conference Workshop 5-100 at RUDN University.
«Every cancer has its distinctive features. Renal cancer is resistant to chemotherapy and radiation therapy that’s why we use a small arsenal for treatment. But P.Herzen Moscow Oncology Research Institute, where I work, does research into surgical and experimental renal cancer treatment».
Experimental oncology therapeutic approaches used for cancer tumor treatment are in the stage of clinical trials and need to be studied further. Ivad Taraki spoke about the clinical record of a 70 year-old patient who firstly was admitted to P.Herzen Institute in 2009.
«The patient had the following chronical diseases: gastritis, arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. But after the examination our anesthesiologists approved resection (an operation aimed at cutting out an organ or a part of an organ — Ed.). After the operation there were only 50-60% of his kidney left. It functioned normally», — Ivad Taraki said.
But when the patient came to be examined in 2012, the doctors found out that the other kidney was also eroded by a tumor.
«We operated on him again and removed the tumor. Thus, we saved two kidneys and excised the tumors. But in January 2017 the patient sought our help again. It’s a very rare case but there was a tumor in his right kidney again. He undergone a full medical examination at our institute. His gastritis was the same, the diabetes mellitus he had became less controllable, his hypertensive disease got worse and we could add myocardial infarction to the list of his diseases which means the operative risks were several times higher than before. Our anesthesiologists forbade to operate on the patient».
We need to turn to anatomy and physiology to study this case. American scientists counted that the vessels of one human are long enough to go round the equator 2.5 times. This principle was adopted for use in endovascular surgery. Human vessels are so extended and convoluted that one can get to different organs through them, and that’s what was done.
«We saw the vessel which feeds the tumor. We blocked this artery and then the tumor stopped to be nurtured. I’ll explain this in layman’s term. We all use the internet. Suppose, the access to different sites was blocked in all your devices. Many of you will be disappointed or depressed. And now think how the tumor will feel. But we went further. The tumor should be finished off, in this case it should be burnt out. That’s exactly what we did.
We prodded the tissue of the kidney with a special device and put needles into the tumor using computer tomography and then we burned out its radio frequencies».
The patient’s treatment was effectively conducted and the patient was dismissed from hospital. Now nothing is wrong with him according to all the medical data. At present P.Herzen Moscow Oncology Research Institute, where RUDN University resident medical practitioner Ivad Taraki works, has a lot of experience in treatment of different pathologies.
«Cancer will be cured. What we had 30-40 years ago is not what we have now», — Ivad said proudly at the end of his speech.
Science Slam is an international project popularizing science. It’s a popular scientific show where researchers speak about the results of their research in layman’s term in a limited amount of time.
In May 2017 Science Slam was held at RUDN University for the first time. Five speakers, who are called slammers, from the universities participating in Project 5-100 - National Research Nuclear University, Novosibirsk State University, MISIS, Higher School of Economics and RUDN University - delivered their speeches.
Any researcher who does research on his own or takes part in joint scientific work can become a slammer. The completed research should be confirmed by a publication in a peer-reviewed scientific journal and if it’s not completed it should be confirmed by affiliation of a candidate with an authoritative scientific or educational organization where the research is being done.
Every slammer speaks about his scientific work for 10 minutes. It can be done in different ways but the speech should be aimed at explaining clearly and truly the essence of their study. It can be realized by means of visual presentations, metaphors, physical objects and etc. The event is organized as a competition. The audience choses the winner of the slam with their applause at the end of the event. The one who has louder applause is the winner.
Science Slam appeared in Germany in 2010. By early 2017 it has been held in almost two dozen countries, including the USA, Great Britain, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Indonesia. Science Slam is transformed in every country. It takes the features of the local academic environment, public events and other cultural peculiarities.
The audience voted unanimously for Ivad Taraki: the audio-noise meter showed 100 decibels.
