Profession

The field of professional activity of graduates who have mastered the postgraduate program in the field of “Chemical Sciences” includes the solution of complex professional problems in the field of high technology and chemical education, covering the totality of tasks in theoretical and applied chemistry, as well as related natural sciences.
The main objectives of the program are:
— formation of skills of independent research and teaching activities;
— in-depth study of the theoretical and methodological foundations of the chemical sciences;
— improvement of philosophical education, including oriented to professional activity;
— improvement of knowledge of a foreign language, including for use in professional activities;
— Implementation of the final original scientific research that contributes to the creation, expansion and development of scientific knowledge.
Graduate students can engage in research activities in organizations both in the field of chemistry and related fields (biochemistry, geochemistry, petrochemistry, ecology, pharmaceuticals); teaching activities in the higher education system, and planning and organizing the work of structural units to solve specific technological problems of a chemical nature.

Educational Process

The postgraduate program in the field of “Chemical Sciences” at the Faculty of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of RUDN University is aimed at training scientific and scientific and pedagogical personnel of higher qualifications capable of innovative activities in the relevant field of chemistry and in related fields of science and higher education.
The postgraduate program consists of the following blocks:
Block 1. “Disciplines”
— Basic part: english; philosophy.
— Variable part: research methodology; priority areas for the development of chemistry; methodology of teaching chemistry in higher education; disciplines of choice (chemistry of coordination compounds, solid state chemistry, supramolecular chemistry of frame compounds, application of synchrotron radiation in the study of inorganic materials).
Block 2. “Practices”
— research practice;
— teaching practice.
Block 3. “Scientific research”
Block 4. “State certification”
— preparation and passing the state exam;
— preparation and presentation of a scientfic report.
Practical classes and scientific research are conducted in educational and research laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation and analytical equipment.
Research Areas:
— new types of functionally substituted compounds of elements of groups 14 and 16 in an unusual valence state and coordination environment;
— structurally substituted complex oxide ceramics with specific electrophysical properties;
— coordination compounds of rare platinum metals with nitrogen and sulfur-containing ligands;
— metal oxide and metal nitride clusters as the basis for creating a new type of material with adjustable magnetic, luminescent, photosensitive and catalytic properties;
— synthesis, study of the structure and properties of molecular clusters and supramolecular compositions based on complexes containing alkali and transition metals.
The postgraduate study program ends with the preparation and defense of a dissertation for the degree of candidate of chemical sciences.

Practice

Pedagogical and research practices, scientific research are real opportunities for graduate students to test themselves as teachers and research chemists. The practices envisaged by the curriculum are carried out on the basis of scientific laboratories of the Department of Inorganic Chemistry of the Faculty of FMiEN, the collective use center “Physicochemical Studies of New Materials, Substances and Catalytic Systems”, and the centers of the Joint Institute for Chemical Research.
Graduate students of the program actively participate in research grants. Widely used cooperation with leading universities of Russia in terms of joint research projects. There is the possibility of international cooperation and study abroad. The Department of Inorganic Chemistry actively collaborates with the laboratories of the Institute of Organoelement Compounds of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis named after Topchiev RAS, Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science named after A.A. Baykova RAS, SIC “Kurchatov Institute”, NIFHI im. L.Ya. Karpova, New Mexico Alpine University (USA).

Career

Graduates of the program continue their careers at foreign universities and institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences; laboratories of scientific centers conducting research in the field of chemistry, biochemistry, geochemistry, petrochemistry, ecology, and pharmaceuticals; research and analytical laboratories of various industries; institutions of higher education.
