Profession
The area of expertise of the graduates, who have completed the postgraduate course in “Chemical Sciences”, is education and science, healthcare, chemical, and chemical and technological production. Within the framework of the acquired competencies and qualifications, graduates can solve complex tasks in research, organizational and management, teaching spheres of activity related to the use of chemical phenomena and processes; participate in the research of chemical processes occurring in nature and conducted in laboratory conditions, in identifying the common patterns of their course and the possibility of controlling them; conduct theoretical and experimental research; master methods of synthesis of the main classes of organic compounds and nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, methods of establishing the structure and stereochemistry of chemical compounds; use information retrieval systems in organic chemistry, the technique of experimental research, as well as related natural science courses. Graduates of the postgraduate course can engage in organizational and management, research, experimental development and a number of other activities, including teaching.
Educational Process
The course is aimed at building the skills required for successful work in a modern scientific environment, as well as General, General Professional and Specialized Professional Competences necessary for the implementation of various types of professional activities of a research chemist: scientific and research, scientific and pedagogical, industrial and technological, organizational and management activities related to the use of chemical phenomena and processes. The Department of Organic Chemistry of the Faculty of Science of the RUDN University is the degree-granting department under this program. Practical training and academic research are conducted in educational and research laboratories equipped with modern instrumentation and analytical equipment. Courses taught: “Foreign language”, “History and philosophy of science”, ”Methodology of scientific research”, ”Priority areas of chemistry”, ”Method of teaching chemistry in a higher educational institution”, ”Chemistry of heterocyclic compounds”, etc.
Practice
Teaching and research internships, scientific research are real opportunities for postgraduate students to try themselves as teachers and research chemists. Internships included in the curriculum are held using scientific laboratories and centers of The Joint Institute for Chemical Research:
— scientific center “Crystal Chemistry and Structural Analysis”;
— scientific center ”Cluster of Streamlined Synthesis of Natural Compounds”;
— scientific center “Microwave-assisted Organic Synthesis”.
Postgraduate students actively take part in grant-funded research. Cooperation with leading universities of Russia is used extensively in terms of joint research projects. There is an opportunity for international cooperation and education abroad. The Chemistry Departments of the faculty actively cooperate with the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry of University of Bari (Italy), where biological activity of synthesized compounds is studied, with The Institute of Medicinal Chemistry (Madrid, Spain).
Career
Graduates are research chemists who work in organizations and firms related to the manufacture, analysis and quality control and implementation of chemical products, in research and development institutes, in pharmaceutical firms and enterprises, as well as in chemical and technological departments of factories, at chemical enterprises which produce fertilizers, plastics, synthetic fiber, at the enterprises of the food, perfume, pulp and paper industry, ore mining and processing, metallurgical combine. The acquired knowledge can be applied in ecology, the agricultural sector, in the field of processing and certification of food and medicinal plants. In addition, a research chemist can engage in teaching activities in the higher education system after having accomplished the postgraduate course.
