Linguistics is a science of different languages, which has a thousand-year history. It is also a science of language as a whole as the main means of communication between people. Scientists of ancient Greece and China, Arab countries and India can be considered the first specialists who studied languages and made alphabets.
The linguist's task is not only to learn the language, but also to know the principles of its structure, to understand how its features affect people and the society speaking it. Specialists in the field of linguistics still remain in demand in various fields of human activity.
The program is designed to train highly qualified specialists who will be able to work in the field of methods of teaching foreign languages at all levels, engage in pedagogical or research activities and work in business structures.
During the training, students not only study foreign languages, but also learn a lot of interesting information about the evolution of languages and dialects, acquire deep knowledge in the field of speech phenomena, about kinship and differences in world languages. Language is an interdisciplinary concept, the mastering of which is based on the system of knowledge, universal competences received by students in the study of general psychology, pedagogy, linguistics, philosophy, and literary criticism.
Due to the fact that Russian and international students study together, they have a unique opportunity to gain invaluable experience of communication with native speakers, to understand and master in practice the basic similarities and differences in languages, dialects, features of pronunciation, approaches to learning and teaching.
All program students study at least two foreign languages. Language classes are held in small groups; not only traditional but also interactive forms of teaching with the help of multimedia and online technologies are employed.
Thanks to the agreements on practical training which are in force, students are invited to work as interpreters at major international sports competitions, cultural, economic and political forums.
Besides, students acquire experience in teaching.
The Philological Faculty has about 30 agreements with international universities, which allows students to go on an educational internship for one or two semesters to universities in England, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, China, Japan, Lebanon and other countries around the world.
The work of a linguist can be very diverse. Graduates of the RUDN Linguistics program are fluent in at least two foreign languages and are demanded specialists in various fields, for example, in the development of computer programs. They can work as interpreters in various fields, or in educational institutions; in museums, hotel business, publishing houses and print media, in creative industry (PR, advertising, marketing); engage in foreign economic activities.
