About the Profession
Nowadays sociology is a dynamically developing discipline and its mastering at the highest level provides the skills to analyze a wide range of social problems, which in turn, makes post graduates in Sociological Sciences competitive and unique specialists and experts in various spheres of social life.
The postgraduate programme in "Theory, Methodology and History of Sociology" is designed primarily for graduates (who earlier received specialized education either in Sociology or in related social and humanitarian fields of study) focusing on their academic and research career-building, e.g., at universities, institutions of the Russian Academy of Sciences, research funds, etc. The conceptual problematics related to this specialty forms the top of the intellectual "iceberg" of Sociological Science, including, above all, fundamental theoretical and methodological knowledge accumulated by Sociology in its history and defining its present development.
The postgraduate programme comprises a compulsory (core) and an elective part. Such structure provides the opportunity to implement postgraduate programmes of different specialization within a single focus area. The postgraduate programme consists of four blocks of disciplines (modules), practical training, research and State Final Certification. Disciplines (modules) belong to the compulsory part of the programme as well as to its elective part. Mastering of the disciplines (modules) provides the development of theoretical and methodological basis, which is indispensable for academic, pedagogical and other professional activities of the postgraduates and is carried out during the first two years of training.
"Foreign Language", "History and Philosophy of Science", "Methodology of Academic Research", "Higher School Pedagogy", "Research Seminar", "Contemporary Sociological Theories", "Methodology and Methods of Sociological Research", "Sociological Methods in the Practice of Management Organization", etc.
Practical training is included into the elective part of the programme and involves practice providing for mastering professional skills and experience (including compulsory teaching practice, which implies, as a rule, teaching classes in one of the core sociological disciplines during a term). For individuals with disabilities practical training places should be chosen with consideration for health and availability requirements. Practical training of postgraduates is carried out both at the profile department (the Chair of Sociology of RUDN) and at affiliate organizations. Practical training is organized with the cooperation of the leading academic (the Institute of Sociology and the Institute of Social and Political Reserch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and research (the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Centre, the Levada-Сenter, the TNS, the GFK, etc.) organizations of Russia.
The graduates of the programme usually choose a career at academic and educational institutions, including classical universities, institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (e.g., the Institute of Sociology and the Institute of Social and Political Research), institutions and organizations carrying out fundamental research of social processes at different levels. Over the past decades the speciality of "Theory, Methodology and History of Sociology" has rightly obtained the most "refined" and well-respected intellectual reputation (among other specialities of academic degrees in Social Sciences).
