About the Profession

Nowadays sociology gives us an opportunity to understand how social life is organized, why people "flock together", why "they behave together in a different way than when they are alone", what they are thinking about, and why their views, beliefs and attitudes  come out to be are so similar, or vice versa, so diverse - these and many other questions continue to puzzle the brains of sociologists who are never tired of solving them. Sociology insists that it is not possible  to understand a person without the society. If you are interested in people - men and women, rich and poor, young and old, the Russians and the French, the Americans and the Chinese, Christians and Muslims, pensioners and businessmen, rock musicians and office managers, hedonists and workaholics, patriots and cosmopolitans, in other words, different people, ‑ choose sociology!

Educational Process

Sociology is a whole planet of knowledge. There are "many sociologies" and a lot of different types of sociologists: some study global problems, others examine the daily routine, and still others investigate the interactions in the spheres of family, gender, professional, political, national, and  confessional relations. Some read smart books, others analyze data using computer programmes, and still others  conduct in-depth interviews and focus group research. Our students learn about all these types of sociological studies and acquire the skills "how to do it".

"Fundamentals of Sociology", "History of Sociology", "Contemporary Sociological Theories", "Methodology and Methods of Sociological Research", "Conflict Theory", "Methods of Applied Statistics for Sociologists", "Methods of Work with Textual Data", "Political Sociology", "Modern Information Technologies in Social Sciences", "Modern Business Strategies", "Personnel Management", "Social Psychology," "Sociology of Public Opinion", " Sociology of Management", "Theory of Probability and Mathematical Statistics", "Philosophy", "Economic Sociology", "Ethnosociology", etc.

Practical training

Since the second year of study our students are involved in case studies carried out by the sociological laboratory. As a result, they master the skills of individual and group research.  Practical sociologist's  job begins with the development of tools and puting forward hypotheses and finishes with data processing and writing an analytical report. All these skills should be  learnt in practice. Students do their practical training not only within the university. Our constant partners are the leading sociological research centres of Russia, including the Russian Public Opinion Research  Centre (VCIOM), "TNS Gallup Media", "ROMIR Monitoring Standard", the International Institute for Marketing and Social Research GfK-Russia, etc. While students are in practical training they establish contacts with their future employers.

Our graduates are successfully employed both in Russia and abroad, they work for high-profile research and analytical companies, famous advertising, brand-building and PR agencies, state institutions and administrative structures, federal and municipal power structures, personnel and recruitment agencies, international and non-governmental organizations, mass  media, leading educational and academic institutions. However, while reading the list of potential positions for employment, one should bear in mind that it is not complete since sociologists work literally everywhere. Much depends on the "breadth of horizons " and "creative imagination" of a young individual armed with knowledge, and our graduates have no problems with it!
