About the profession

The work of a design engineer starts with a project development assignment. First of all, this specialist considers the schemes of parts and mechanisms, the sequence of the necessary technological processes, makes mathematical and economic calculations. The drawings and documentation prepared by an engineer are approved by the management, after which the manufacture of a technical device begins. An engineer must be involved in the process of production, assembly and testing of a product, make recommendations and comments if necessary. Engineers are also engaged in drafting instructions on the use of the device manufactured, technical specifications and other similar documents. Representatives of professions of a design engineer and a process engineer are rare nowadays. Not everyone decides to become an engineer. There is a high demand among employers for specialists in this field; therefore, these professions can be called rare.

Training process

The programme trains process engineers to work in production and design engineers who create new equipment in design organizations. Students take an in-depth study of foreign technical language, IT-technologies that allow quickly and accurately making calculations and designing future machines, modern industrial equipment, including machine tools with programmed control.
Classes in special disciplines are also held in lecture halls equipped with technical teaching aids, which greatly simplifies the mastering of the training content, expands the boundaries of the possibility of giving traditional lectures. In lecture halls there are posters on various sections of the disciplines studied and full-scale samples.
The specialized disciplines cover the main directions of design and technological support of machine-building industries:

  • Technological processes in mechanical engineering
  • Automatic control theory
  • Basics of engineering technology
  • Shaping processes and operations
  • Engineering production equipment
  • Methods of computer-aided design of products and processes in mechanical engineering
  • CAD basics
  • Material cutting
  • Physical and chemical processing methods
  • Hydropneumatics of technological equipment
  • Cutting tool
  • CAD technological processes
  • Production organization and management
  • CAE systems in mechanical engineering
  • Software statistical complexes
  • Physical basis of measurement
  • Work-pieces manufacture technology
  • Engineering technology
  • Technology and organization of car repair
  • Machine-tool attachments

Traineeship and internship

During the period of study, students undertake an internship at the Department, Zhukovsky Machine-Building Plant OJSC, Creative Bureau No.1 LLC, Naro-Fominsk Machine-Building Plant JSC, Scientific Production Center for Gas Turbine Construction “Salyut” JSC, Aviation Corporation “Rubin” OJSC, Toolmakers on Sapphire “Vozrozhdeniye” OJSC; Measuring Equipment SPA, etc.
When undertaking introductory, educational and on-the-job internships, students learn current technology, organization and management of enterprises, as well as the latest research methods.
The Department has long-term and productive relationship with the leading Russian universities (Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys, Moscow State Technical University "Stankin", Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas (National Research University), etc.).

Career opportunities

During the whole period of study, students annually undertake educational and on-the-job internships at the leading machine-building enterprises in Moscow, the Moscow Region and other regions.
Graduates of the programme work at machine-building enterprises, in industrial committees, research and design institutes.
