Genetics: Molecular Basis of Human Hereditary Diseases
Genetics which subject is the heredity and variability of organisms, is a young and dynamically developing field of science. It is divided into a large number of specialized disciplines (cytogenetics, pharmacogenetics, population genetics, human genetics, etc.). At the same time, all specialized genetic disciplines are based on fundamental scientific information, which is accumulated and systematized within the general genetics. Nowadays medical genetics is developing extremely actively. Its task is to study the genetic basis of human hereditary pathology. Modern genetics uses molecular, biochemical, cytogenetic and other research methods. It leads to significant progress in our knowledge about the heredity and variability of humans, including the molecular mechanisms of genetic processes that underlie the formation of normal and pathological traits. Scientific advances in this area open the door for solving such practical problems as early diagnosis, prevention and treatment of hereditary diseases.
Intensive immersion in the profession starts from the first year. Post-graduate students study the structure and functions of nucleic acids, the gene expression and its regulation, the patterns of gene inheritance and their cytological basis, methods of human genetics, hereditary human diseases and the principles of their diagnosis, prevention and treatment. They acquire the competencies necessary both for conducting scientific research and for implementing the educational process in higher education institutions.

The research training is carried out in the Laboratory of biomolecular research at RUDN university, other institutions (in case of need), and libraries. The teaching practice is carried out at the Department of Biology and General Genetics during all years of study. Post-graduate students acquire skills in teaching first-year students of the RUDN Medical Institute in Biology.
Postgraduates, that successfully master the educational program, will be able to conduct basic and applied genetic research, developing and improving the necessary laboratory methods. In the field of teaching, they will get the skills in developing training courses; preparation of teaching materials and textbooks; teaching genetic disciplines in higher education institutions; supervising student research projects.
