About the profession

Russian scholars came to know China more than 300 years ago when the first Russian Orthodox Ecclesiastical Mission was sent to China in 1714. Since that time the study of Russia in China has also been continuing.

Both Russian Sinologists and Chinese specialists in Russian Study have paid great attention to the scrutiny of various aspects of the philosophical streams in the partner country. In the middle of the twentieth century the new school of thought - "comparative philosophy" was developed in the frameworks of the research conducted by «Philosophy East and West» journal. Comparative philosophy—sometimes called "cross-cultural philosophy"—is a study of cross-cultural interaction of civilizations and a work on problems by intentionally setting into dialogue sources from across cultural and philosophical streams.

The collaborative master's program of the RUDN and Shandong University "Philosophy: Dialogue of Cultures" is designed to fill this lacuna and is aimed at training of highly qualified professionals with fundamental knowledge and expertise in Chinese, Russian and Western philosophies capable of understanding and explaining the "Chinese view of the world" as well as providing a professional scientific examination of China, which is currently in high demand by both governmental and commercial bodies.

Educational process

The first year of the program is held at Shandong University, located in Shandong Province - the recognized cradle of Chinese culture. Students are immersed in the atmosphere of Chinese philosophy; they study in depth the main schools of classical Chinese philosophy, as well as modern currents of Chinese thought. Particular attention is paid to the study of authentic texts.

The second year in RUDN is devoted to fundamental courses in philosophy, methodological characteristics of comparative philosophy as well as to analysing the ways and mechanisms of philosophical intercultural dialogue between the traditions of Russia and China in the context of the cross-cultural interaction of modern civilizations.

Chinese Slavic students participating in the program are trained in Shandong University  for the first year. During the second year in RUDN they get acquainted with basic courses on comparative philosophy, study in depth the various trends of Russian philosophy and defend the master's thesis carried out under the supervision of postgraduates' academic advisers from the History of Philosophy Chair of RUDN.

History of Philosophy: Problems of Method and Theory, Methodological Problems of Philosophical Research, Confucian Philosophy, Philosophical Textology (based on the works of Chinese classical philosophy), Philosophy of Iszinianism, Philosophy of Taoism, etc.

Practical training

During the first year of the collaborative magistracy at RUDN - Shandong University "Philosophy: Dialogue of Cultures" students work in Chinese archives and libraries in order to collect scientific materials unavailable in Russia. The second year of the programme involves teaching practice as well as academic research, which can be undertaken at RUDN and at the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences and  Institute of Scientific Information on Social Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The spheres of professional activities of the postgraduates, who completed the programme successfully, include educational organizations of general and vocational education. Specialists in comparative philosophy are of high-demand in academic and scientific-research organizations. Providing of qualitative expertise on various aspects of Russian-Chinese interaction in the spheres of business, PR, government affairs, international projects and public organizations is exceptionally actionable nowdays.
