About the profession

The residency programme aims to acquire professional competences in the study and treatment of lung diseases, upper and lower respiratory tracts (excluding tuberculosis), reception of patients who have (or are suspected to have) serious respiratory pathologies, including deadly ones, and the conduct of diagnosis and prescription of treatment. The complexity of the pulmonologist's work is that among the patients of this specialist there are many people with really serious diagnoses. The specialist needs to have much patience and optimism to inspire a sick person to overcome a disease and, at the same time, discipline him/her, to urge to strictly observe all the prescriptions. The joint efforts of a doctor and a patient give very good results. And this is one of the pleasant moments of the profession.

Training process

The educational residency programme "Pulmonology" is developed for people with higher medical education, aimed at training highly qualified specialists in the study of pathologies of the respiratory organs, for independent work in public healthcare institutions or for the conduct of private practice. Training is practically oriented and aimed at the formation of system knowledge and professional competences that allow conducting medical activities.


Medical residents are distributed to the units of the clinical sites of the department, where, under the guidance of professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice. Students analyze clinical events and this provides the opportunity to obtain a wealth of clinical experience during residency training.


A graduate of the residency programme is a highly qualified specialist, who can apply modern high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment and carry out therapeutic, diagnostic, research activities, engage in private medical practice. Graduates of the programme have the opportunity to work in polyclinics, hospitals, medical centers, research centers.
