Regional Studies (China Studies)
About the profession
Regional Studies Program looks at the world in its whole variety, it is well-defined, multi-dimensional and integral; it addresses the issues of states and regions directly and views them in a complete, multi-aspect way. Regional Studies Program prepares experts on a particular region, state or group of states. Theory and History of International Relations Department provides education along the China Studies profile.
It is no secret that today’s world requires that professionals should be in possession of cross-disciplinary skills. And this is what Regional Studies Program provides for. A Regional Studies specialist-sinologist is a historian, political scientist, diplomat, economist, lawyer, and linguist combined. A profound knowledge of the economy, geography, history, demography, language and culture of the region enables Regional Studies graduates to find employment in various fields. Regional Studies graduates are well-prepared to provide professional translation, participate in shaping international agenda, develop investment projects, conduct statistical research and consult on the problems of the region. Within the framework of the discipline they run analytics with regard to historical, natural resource, ethnic, religious, environmental, political, intra-and interregional factors.
The students master fundamental theoretical disciplines, historical disciplines and more specialized subjects on China issues. The syllabus centers on Regional Studies cycle with special regard to the region under study – its geography and history, economy and finance, culture and religion, foreign policy and international relations.
The teaching staff includes leading Russian experts working with RUDN University, MGIMO University, Diplomatic Academy with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ISAAS with MSU, RAS Institute for Far Eastern Studies, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rossotrudnichestvo Agency.
“History and Methodology of Complex Regional Studies”, “China in Global Civilization”, “China in Contemporary International Relations”, “Foreign Policy Decision-Making in China”, “Confucianism in World Politics”, “Chinese Migration in the World”, “Ethnic Psychology of Eastern Asia Nations”, “Integration Processes in East Asia”, “Energy Security in International Relations in East Asia”, etc.
The program provides for pre-graduation internship during which the students register with the Russian State Library, RAS Institute for Far Eastern Studies Library, ISAAS Library, etc., to do scientific research of their own.
In terms of professional occupation our graduates excel as diplomats, experts in Regional Studies, analysts, political journalists, legal counsels with Regional Studies expertise, economists with Regional Studies expertise, managers with Regional Studies expertise. They fulfill a wide range of roles from a bank account manager to First Secretary of a Russian Embassy. Our graduates work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, "Rossotrudnichestvo" Agency, "Russia Today" International Information Agency, ITAR-TASS, diplomatic bodies of foreign countries, international organizations, commercial structures, scientific research centers, higher educational institutions in Russia and abroad.
