About the Profession
According to Russian historiography the first diplomatic contacts were recorded in the period of Kievan Rus (Old East Slavic State under the reign of the Rurik dynasty). Europe monarchies and states were the objects of international and trade relations. After the Rus’s attack on Constantinople the first international treaty of “peace and love” was signed between Kievan Rus and the most powerful Europe state - Byzantine Empire.
The Ambassador Order, the Collegium of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are the names of the main diplomatic institutions of the Russian state in different historical periods. A lot of famous and highly educated people implemented the foreign policy of Russia. A diplomat is the most prestigious profession in the world, a diplomat is a person with fundamental knowledge in history, international relations, world economy and politics, as well as bilateral and multilateral cross-cultural communication.
It is obvious that our modern and global world still can’t avoid conflicts or, due to Samuel P. Huntington conflicts between civilizations. Today in Europe we could witness a new wave of resettlement (migration) of peoples, a new sort of conflicts and processes. The European Studies (BA) is a programme that allows you to study Modern Europe, to understand contemporary European processes within the world politics and the system of contemporary international relations.

The main educational goal within European Studies is to provide a student with in-depth training in politics, history, international relations, language and contemporary culture of modern European countries. Students take courses in international relations, economics, politics, security, history and culture of European countries, diplomatic etiquette, intercultural communication, foreign languages.
An integral part of the educational process is classes in foreign languages. The programme includes the study of two European languages, the main of which is English recognized as the language of international communication and diplomacy, a second language is chosen by the students themselves.
The learning process includes the application of innovative methods, new information and communication technologies and modern multimedia courses.
The Institute of Foreign Languages is accredited by London Chamber of Commerce and Industry as the International Test Centre of LCCI International Qualifications. After completing their studies, students pass international certification exams which give them an opportunity to work and study abroad.
Practical skills are extremely important for future diplomats and specialists in international relations. Different Departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation are open for the most successful students, especially in foreign languages, as oral and written practice in foreign languages, including practice in translation and interpreting, is the essence of everyday student’s life. Students acquire professional skills in different international corporations, funds and companies. The main practice bases are offices of European companies, embassies, diplomatic missions and cultural centers of European countries in Russia.
Graduates can carry out professional activities in prestigious international organizations (including the public ones); diplomatic missions, cultural centres and embassies of foreign countries; international archives; international publishers; international mass-media; in bodies of state and municipal management; prestigious national companies advancing in Europe; transnational corporations, tourism and hospitality industry, can launch internationally oriented business of their own, etc.
