About the profession

The residency programme aims to acquire professional competences in diagnosing, treating and developing specific preventive measures aimed at eliminating joint and connective tissue diseases. The residents study the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of inflammatory, degenerative and dystrophic joint diseases. In addition, a rheumatologist treats collagenoses - systemic vasculitis. The advantage of the programme is that a modern rheumatologist has an extensive scope of work, compared to specialists of other medical specialties. The areas of expertise of this specialist include a huge number of diseases of various organ systems, the symptoms or general consequences of which are lesions of bones, muscles and joints.

Training process

The educational residency programme "Rheumatology" is developed for people with higher medical education, aimed at training highly qualified specialists in the field of methods for diagnosing, treating and preventing connective tissue diseases, in particular, joint diseases, for independent work in public healthcare institutions or for the conduct of private practice. Training is practically oriented and aimed at the formation of system knowledge and professional competences that allow conducting medical activities.


Medical residents are distributed to the units of the clinical sites of the department, where, under the guidance of professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice. Students analyze clinical events and this provides the opportunity to obtain a wealth of clinical experience during residency training.


The field of study “Rheumatology” has become popular due to the fact that the share of such problems among the total number of diseases is growing every year and the age of patients is getting younger. Therefore, qualified specialists are required in order to prevent the development of complications in the form of early disability and to improve the quality of patients’ life.
