About the profession

The program "Russian as a foreign language" is a good basis for a successful teaching career.
The profession of a teacher of RFL is RUDN University brand identity. This is teaching foreign language to students (children and adults) for whom Russian is a foreign, non-native or second native language. The most important task of the RFL teacher is not only teaching the Russian language, its structure and ability to communicate, but also immersing the students in the culture, history and traditions of Russia, as well as helping them integrate into the Russian socio-cultural space. This program is aimed at training specialists in the field of intercultural communication, whose professional competences are in demand in a multi-ethnic audience, for example, in universities with an international composition of students or in schools where children of migrants study. It is the teacher who plays the key role in the process of teaching languages, including RFL.
The program "Russian as a foreign language" gives students all the necessary competences to successfully work in the field of RFL.

 

Educational process

 

Students study theoretical and practical courses of the Russian language and methods of teaching it to a foreign audience, psychological and pedagogical disciplines, the basics of professional and business communication and intercultural communication. A significant part of the program is disciplines of a linguistic and cultural nature: "Linguistic and cultural aspect of the studied language ", "Linguistic and regional aspect of the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language", etc.
During the entire training period, students work on a variety of projects, both of research nature and those aimed at developing practical skills to integrate modern computer technologies and tools into the learning process, as well as elaborate comprehensive training courses on their basis.
A significant place is occupied by applied disciplines: "Workshops for teachers of RFL", "Theory and methods of teaching Russian as a foreign language", "Ethno-oriented teaching of Russian as a foreign language".
The graduating department - department of the Russian language and methods of its teaching, has created a scientific school for theoretical and applied research in the field of teaching of Russian as a foreign language in the context of culture. Among annual events are the All-Russian scientific and practical conferences with international participation for young scientists and students "Current problems of the Russian language and methods of its teaching" and the All-Russian Olympiad in Russian for international students. The International scientific seminar "Current problems of the Russian language and methods of its teaching" is organized regularly.
Since 1960, the department has been honored to have on staff Professor Serafima Khavronina, Ph.D. (Teaching sciences), one of the founders of the methodology of teaching Russian as a foreign language in the USSR and in Russia, specialist in the field of linguistic didactics, methods of teaching RFL, author of about 150 scientific publications (textbooks, teaching aids and articles). The textbooks "Speak Russian" and "Russian in Exercises" have gone through more than 70 reprints, including in 20 foreign languages. Professor Khavronina’s manuals are used to teach Russian to foreign astronauts in Gagarin Star City.
In 2020, the department held an international scientific conference "The Russian language in the modern scientific and education space", dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Professor Serafima Khavronina. After the conference, a collection of articles indexed in WoS was published (https://www.europeanproceedings.com/proceedings/EpSBS).
Over the past few years, the department has been working on several grants:
- Grant from the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Conducting “Russian Language Days” in Sri Lanka (grant contract No. 2154GR/11-230-19);
- Russian Foundation for Basic Research grant. Holding an international scientific and practical conference of young scientists "Studying and teaching the Russian language in various linguistic and cultural environments" (contract No. 19-012-20113\119);
- Grant from the Russkiy Mir Foundation. Holding the XVI All-Russian Olympiad for students in Russian as a foreign language (contract No. 2257GR / 11-114-19);
From 1990 to 2021, more than 180 PhD and Doctoral dissertations were prepared and defended at the department. The staff members of the department regularly publish scientific articles in high-ranking scientific journals.

 

Practical training

 

Within the framework of teaching practice, postgraduate students are trained to teach programs of higher education. During research practice, attention is paid to the development of skills for independent activity in the field of planning, organizing scientific research, processing and presenting teaching experiment results. Young scientists attend scientific seminars of leading professors of RUDN Philological Faculty and invited researchers, as well as international conferences. Postgraduate students participate in the implementation of scientific projects of leading scientists of the Faculty of Philology and are actively involved in joint research work with top Russian and foreign universities.

 

Career

 

The program "Russian as a foreign language" prepares for a successful teaching career in primary, secondary or higher education institutions. A graduate of the master's program can teach Russian to a foreign or mixed audience, comment, edit texts, advise on linguistic didactics, do linguistic and cultural text analysis, and create their own educational and methodological materials on the Russian language. Graduates of this program are in demand in the modern educational market, including in foreign centers of the Russian language, international higher educational institutions and schools, as well as in foreign companies as consultants on intercultural communication.
