About the profession

A practicing surgeon is one of the most in-demand medical specialties. A resident learns to fully master the practices, methodologies and methods of performing surgical interventions, should have medical and general biological knowledge, determine the most effective methods of patient therapy. The training process consists of regular practical classes held in city hospitals, regional centers, hospitals. The curriculum also includes lectures for residents, which are read by outstanding specialists. The practical work of a resident implies the assistance in surgeries, participation in councils of doctors, the work in a polyclinic, participation in scientific conferences, the maintenance of medical records, the performance of medical and diagnostic procedures. The training of a resident is directly connected with his/her advisors and fully corresponds to the work of a medical specialist.

Training process

The educational programme on the specialty is developed for people with higher medical education, aimed at training highly qualified specialists in the field of diagnostics and operative therapy of various pathologies and traumatic situations. Training is practically oriented and aimed at the formation of system knowledge and professional competences that allow carrying out medical activities.


Medical residents are distributed to the units of the clinical sites of the department, where, under the guidance of professors of the department, they have the opportunity both to expand their knowledge and see its application in practice. Students analyze clinical events and this provides the opportunity to obtain a wealth of clinical experience during residency training.


A graduate of the residency programme is a highly qualified specialist, who can apply modern high-tech methods of diagnosis and treatment and carry out therapeutic, diagnostic, research activities, engage in private medical practice. Upon completion of the training, a graduate receives a surgeon's certificate and has the opportunity to work in specialized healthcare institutions, multidisciplinary medical institutions that have in their structure specialized medical diagnostic departments of surgery, public hospitals, higher educational institutions of medical specialization. Upon completion of the residency programme, the students have the opportunity to enroll in the postgraduate programme on the specialization "Surgery", that will further allow them to hold a managerial position or engage in the scientific activity.
