25 winners of the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards 2024 scholarship program came to RUDN University
A semester-long study is ahead of them: practical classes in English, excursions, new friends. The Institute of Environmental Engineering has developed a program on sustainable urban development management and climate action designed exclusively for the students.
Leaving the sunny lands of Indonesia, I decided to embark on a completely new journey to Russia, driven by a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. RUDN University is a special world of diverse cultures and I am very much looking forward to be a part of it.
RUDN University on the IISMA shortlist
RUDN University has been shortlisted for the second time as one of the universities entitled to train scholarship holders of the International Student Mobility Awards 2024. For Indonesian students, the Institute of Environmental Engineering has developed a program on sustainable urban development management and climate action. It was inaugurated on September 4.
We are honored to host Indonesian students for the second time as part of the international IISMA project. In 2021, the first 13 students were trained at our Institute. In 2024, 25 students from leading universities of Indonesia have already come to us. We are ready to share our long-term experience in the field of urban environmental safety, optimization of transport loads, greenhouse gas management and development of climate projects.
Training program
In the course of the training the students will have to analyze different aspects of sustainable development of a modern city: energy and water resources, urban ecosystems, quality control of the urban environment, climate neutrality.
The knowledge and skills I will acquire here will be directly applicable to solving major urban problems in Indonesia. My country faces major challenges such as rapid urbanization, poor infrastructure and environmental degradation. To address this problem, a sound urban policy for sustainable development is necessary. Through this program, I hope to learn about the latest global trends and best practices, which I can then adapt for Indonesia.
Students in the program will be able to choose 4 disciplines that are most relevant and interesting to them out of possible 10:
- Sustainable Urban Development Management: Basic Indicators and Models
- Energy Resource Management
- Modern Waste Management
- Environmental Quality Assessment
- Greenhouse gases emissions accounting and management
- Remote sensing and GIS technologies for sustainable development projects
- Global and Regional Climate Change: Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies
- Water Quality Management and Modeling in the City
- Urban Ecosystems and Their Services
- Hello, Russia! Basics of Russian language and Culture
Indonesian students will also take part in environmental monitoring of the RUDN campus, speak at conferences, round tables and seminars of the Institute of Environmental Engineering. In addition to training sessions, the scholarship holders will visit production sites and specialized expositions. During their first days in the capital they have already visited the exhibition “Moscow 2030”, where they got acquainted with perspective directions of the development of the city's transportation system.
We also plan to visit exhibitions on waste management and water use, Moscow museums (Museum of Earth Science, Museum of Water, Darwin Museum, Museum of Soils, etc.), as well as scientific organizations.
Choice of Country
All the students came to Russia for the first time, but each had a different reason. For example, Yusriani Mardhiyyah Arifin has long been interested in railroads, and she is particularly attracted by the history of the Trans-Siberian Railway
The railroad itself is a symbol of Russia's economic power and industrial prowess - it is the very thing that inspired me to study in this country and at RUDN University!
As a Chemistry department student, Shammara Ardine Angelique notes that she chose Russia because of the country's achievements in Chemistry.
Russia has a rich history of scientific innovations and many Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry. The country's strong emphasis on research, especially in the natural sciences, makes it an ideal place for aspiring chemists. In addition, with its rigorous academic standards, Russia offers access to state-of-the-art laboratories, experienced teaching staff and a collaborative research environment.
I was attracted by the ambitious environmental development goals put forward by the Russian government in 2021. This closely aligns with my interests as an aspiring urban planner.
First Impressions
In their free time, the scholarship holders from Indonesia join the student life and get acquainted with Moscow. Many things seem new and unusual to them, so they are happy to share their impressions.
Thus, Muhammad Filzah Zulfaqar was particularly surprised by the combination of historic and modern buildings
The landmarks such as the Kremlin and Red Square stand next to sleek modern skyscrapers. The grandeur of the stations, often referred to as ‘palaces for the people’, leaves me in awe. Each station is a work of art, reflecting Russia's rich cultural and historical heritage.
This city is definitely an example for developing countries including Indonesia.
The RUDN campus did not leave the students indifferent either. For example, Gita Ostensia Sandeni Putri noted the religious features.
It is surprising that as a Muslim woman I feel incredibly happy to see a lot of halal food on campus. Thanks to RUDN University, I hope to be able to spend my time here comfortably.
