Remote sensing of the Earth, forestry and environmental engineering… RUDN University develops cooperation with the University of Sri Lanka

From June 12 to 15, RUDN University delegation paid a working visit to Sri Lanka discussing joint eco-projects, holding a summer school and an Olympiad.

RUDN University delegation held working meetings to develop a strategy for cooperation between universities. The main focus is joint educational programs of environmental engineering in the field of carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas management.

Experts trained undergraduate students of the Department of Forestry and Ecology to use the prospects of using remote sensing of the Earth and GIS technologies, to determine the difference between the characteristics of forests in the middle belt and tropical rainforests in terms of vegetation indices. These classes were held under the program of the summer school “GIS Technologies in Ecology” on the basis of RUDN specialized class at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

“Despite the fact that our universities started cooperation not so long ago, interesting joint projects in the scientific and technical field have already been implemented, and the summer school is an excellent continuation of cooperation in the field of education, which gave our students an opportunity to learn from Russian colleagues,” said Hemanty Ranasinghe, Professor at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

June 14, RUDN University held an Open Ecology Olympiad. It was attended by more than 20 students from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The winners of the Olympiad will be able to study at RUDN for free.

Members of the delegation:

  • Anna Popkova  — Deputy Director for International Activities of the Institute of Ecology;
  • Daria Kapralova  — Associate Professor, Department of Environmental Management, Institute of Ecology.
