Request of a Ghanaian industrial partner. RUDN will train 121 agronomists and ecologist for Jospong group of companies, represented in 14 sectors of the economy

Request of a Ghanaian industrial partner. RUDN will train 121 agronomists and ecologist for Jospong group of companies, represented in 14 sectors of the economy

In the morning, the main building is always crowded, students rushing to their first class. Suddenly, there is a large group of smiling young people from Africa, very smartly dressed, wearing scarfs with two logos on them, one — a university logo and the other — an unfamiliar abbreviation JGC.

We are here to get education, and then return to Ghana and help our country. Ghana’s main sphere is agriculture. We want to increase production and create more products. This is our goal, says Prosper.

Qualified specialists will all return home in two years, but for now they will study in an English-language master’s program and live in a RUDN dormitory.

91 students will study agronomy, while 30 — ecology.

The first meeting of the conglomerate of 60 Jospong companies and the most multidisciplinary and international university took place in April last year in Accra (Ghana), at a seminar on the development of industrial and educational cooperation with African countries. Then followed the Russia-Africa summit and the presentation of the project “RUDN Agrotechnopark: export to Africa”. As a result RUDN Agrarian and Technological Institute and RUDN Institute of Ecology started opening targeted master’s programs for the tasks of the industrial partner.

Interest of the country and the partner

Ghana needs specialists capable of producing in the country those crops and products that are imported today. Jospong, as an industrial partner, is primarily interested in growing potatoes, onion and rice. This is the key task of the state import substitution program in the field of food security in Ghana.

Choice in favor of RUDN

RUDN has extensive experience in training personnel for Ghana; all in all, the university has trained 582 specialists for this country. The university scientists are experts in the field of food safety and quality, and adaptation of various crops resistant to African climate zones. Jospong is interested in the experience of RUDN experts and recommendations of the university scientists.

Study plan

Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia has developed individual tracks for training students. The first year is studying basic disciplines.

  • Future agrarians begin to study plant resistance to different regions, plant quarantine, phytopathology, and plant protection.
  • Ecologists will gain competences in the following areas: waste-to-energy technologies, low-waste and resource-saving technologies, biotechnology for environmental protection, biodegradation of organic waste, and waste recycling.

After the first year, practical training and internships will begin. Each student will get a corporate task from the industrial partner, in particular, the adaptation of a specific plant variety or crop for cultivation in the African region.

We are students now

Today, the Russian and Ghanaian anthems were played at the students initiation ceremony at RUDN University. The students got acquainted with the university and teachers. Future specialists shared their impressions and career plans.

I want to study Russian culture and learn to speak Russian fluently. But the main motive for our studies and this initiative is to increase food security in Ghana and Africa as a whole. We hope to gain knowledge here, return home and support the development of this sphere.

Confucius Nkrumah

It’s still unusual but we are trying to adapt quickly. We need to train hard, because Ghana is heavily dependent on agriculture. Most of the population is engaged in farming. I think this project will help improve the agricultural sector and the living conditions of Ghanaians. We will gain knowledge and experience that can be applied at home and improve this sector in Ghana.

Azeco Matilda

I hope that the training will give a lot of theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Good nature and friendliness of Russians was a pleasant surprise that we did not expect. We are very happy to come here and meet such people.

Eddie Benjamin

It took them 24 hours and several transfers to find themselves in Russia. For many of them it was the first airplane flight, while for some this was their first trip at all.
