RUDN environmentalists will train the specialists from Ghana on the effective waste management
Why are specialists from Ghana interested in waste management and implementation of the circular economy principles?
- The region ranks among the first in terms of solid municipal waste (MSW) pollution.
- ~50% of all electrical appliances end up in the city's landfills, where they are subsequently incinerated, releasing pollutants into the atmosphere.
- ~129 million tons of broken electronics per year arrive in the region.
The problem of handling and utilization of solid waste is one of the priorities for Ghana. A school opening ceremony was held ahead of the three-week training.
Today it is extremely important to create a highly qualified personell for the development and implementation of an effective waste management system.
In 2023, RUDN University and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly signed an agreement on cooperation in science and education. Vocational training for colleagues from Ghana is the first step in the implementation of the agreement.
The Winter School plays an important role in promoting bilateral cooperation in education and science with partners from Africa.
Elena Savenkova, Director of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of RUDN University, said that the training will be practice-oriented. Colleagues from Ghana will visit advanced industrial waste management sites, where they will be able to familiarize themselves with modern equipment and technologies that are used in the field of solid waste management in Russia.
School participants will have an opportunity to get acquainted with modern equipment and new technologies in the sphere of solid municipal waste collection, storage and utilization.
The problem of waste management is one of the main problems for many countries. In order to effectively manage solid waste and increase the share of recyclable materials in the recycling process, methods are being developed to automate processes, and IT technologies are being introduced at all stages: collection, accumulation, logistics and recycling.
On behalf of the Municipality I would like to express gratitude to RUDN University for the organization of advanced training. We are confident that the experience and knowledge gained during the training will be used in our region to address the issue of waste utilization, recycling and storage.
