Architectural-Landscape Project by RUDN student makes it to the shortlist of ADD AWARDS

An architectural-landscape project by a 5th-year student of RUDN has been shortlisted for the annual International Professional ADD AWARDS 2024 for architects, designers, and developers in the “Urban Environment” category. The jury and experts evaluated over 2,500 works, and a total of 1,088 projects made it to the shortlist across all categories. Among the best projects is the work of RUDN Engineering Academy student Heinrich Bartels, who presented the project “Bridge of Opportunities” in Nakhabino (Moscow Region). The project was developed under the guidance of Da Fonseca Vera Kruz Morjadino.

The “Bridge of Opportunities” is a revitalization project for an abandoned bulk bridge as part of a landscaping program aimed at improving public areas and creating a comfortable urban environment in Nakhabino. The bulk bridge over the Gryazevka River connects Nakhabino with a residential area. However, the 3.3-hectare site is in poor condition: there is no lighting, no recreational areas, but there are strong winds. The project aims to transform the site into a modern year-round public space, turning the bridge into a “bridge of opportunities of the 21st century.”

A large grocery store is located nearby, and a little further away are a general education middle school and high school, surrounded by green areas, making it an attractive center for teenagers and young people. To ensure comfortable and safe atmosphere, Heinrich Bartels proposes creating an open space for leisure activities.

Conceptually, the place is divided into two levels:

  1. The upper level — the embankment of the pedestrian bridge for various activities.
  2. The lower level — a quiet green relaxation area.

A spiral bridge connects both levels. Its central feature is a system of windbreaks made of short curved walls. These structures dampen wind flows and serve as seating areas and spaces for street art.

The meadow is divided into three functional zones:

  • A zone with small architectural forms featuring a gazebo and swings.
  • A barbecue area equipped with designated fire spots.
  • Three fire pits recessed for wind protection.

To take into account the ecological characteristics of the area, the concept integrates seamlessly into the existing landscape.

The International Professional ADD AWARD for architects, designers, and developers is an independent open contest in the fields of private and public architecture, interior design, product design, and landscape architecture. The project was created to facilitate communication within the professional community of the interior and architectural markets. The contest is based on principles of equality among participants, independence, and professionalism of the jury and expert council.
