Helen Karatza, Professor Emeritus of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Department of Informatics (Greece), the Editorial Board member of international journals, author over 220 technical papers and book chapters including five papers that earned best paper awards at international conferences, senior member of IEEE, ACM and SCS will come to visit the RUDN University and to give the plenary talk at the 25th International Conference on Analytical & Stochastic Modelling Techniques & Applications ASMTA-2019 on the subject «Scheduling Complex Applications in Cloud Environments – Research Trends and Challenges» on September 23.
The objective of this plenary talk is to survey recent advances in cloud computing covering various concepts on complex applications scheduling and to provide research directions and challenges in the cloud computing area.
For several years now, cloud computing offers virtually unlimited computing resources to consumers, enterprises and researchers as utilities, on a pay-as-you-go basis. In particular cloud computing provides a cost-effective infrastructure to end users for running complex computationally intensive applications. With the advent of the cloud computing paradigm many new challenges have appeared which led to changes on traditional computing. However, there are critical issues that must be addressed, in order to exploit all cloud computing capabilities. This is mainly due to the large scale of the cloud and the continuously increasing number of cloud users and applications deployed in it. Consequently, extensive research has been carried out in cloud computing which spans areas such as resource allocation, scheduling, availability, cost, reliability, quality of service, energy conservation, virtualization. Scheduling algorithms play an important role in cloud computing and must provide a good performance to leasing cost ratio. Very important in cloud computing is the effective scheduling of complex real-time applications, considering not only the processing times but also the cost of the energy consumption. Therefore, energy efficient scheduling strategies are required allowing for guarantees that the deadlines of complex applications will be met.
