We consider the question of the existence of nonsmooth eigenfunctions of the Dirichlet problem for a differential-difference operator on the interval (0,d). An example is given of a positive-definite differential-difference operator such there is a countable number of eigenvalues corresponding to smooth solutions and a countable number of eigenvalues corresponding to solutions for which smoothness is violated.
