Young scientists of RUDN University won the All-Russian conference “Physics of Aqueous Solutions”

About 150 leading Russian and foreign scientists met at the 7th All-Russian Conference "Physics of Aqueous Solutions" at the Russian Academy of Sciences.

A total of 107 reports were presented at the conference in 5 sections:

  • Models of the structure and chemical kinetics of aqueous solutions
  • Aqueous solutions in biological systems
  • Methods of investigation of aqueous solutions
  • Aqueous solutions in materials science
  • Aqueous solutions in pharmacy.

Elena Uspenskaya, Professor of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry at RUDN University, Doctor of Pharmacy, supervised the section "Aqueous Solutions in Pharmacy" for the second time. Two reports from RUDN University were highly appreciated by RAS academicians and became winners:

  • 1st place for the best oral presentation "The phenomenon of radiothermal radiation from aqueous solutions of nanoparticles" — Gleb Petrov, Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry.
  • 1st place for the best poster report "Investigation of the properties of pharmaceutical substances of zinc sulfate using IR spectrometry: qualitative and quantitative analysis" — Elizaveta Kuzmenko, laboratory assistant at the Department of Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry.

In his report, Gleb Petrov described the physics of radio thermal emission of nanoparticles. The theses were a continuation of his PhD thesis on the topic "Development of a method for quality control of medicines containing biologically active nanoparticles based on their own radiothermal radiation."

The phenomenon of radiothermal emission of nanoparticles is observed if a drug based on biologically active nanoparticles has a non-spherical, irregular shape. Then it is possible to form plasma-like regions that act as the basis for radiothermal emission. The uniqueness of the method lies in the fact that the analysis can be carried out non-invasively, that is, to control the quality characteristics of the drug without opening the primary packaging. If we turn to modern methods of quality control of medicines based on biologically active nanoparticles: dynamic light scattering, electron microscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, IR and UV spectroscopy, then none of them provides such an opportunity. The proposed method makes it possible to confirm the suitability of a medicinal product for use at all its life stages, from production to distribution.ф

Even though the topic is directly related to the PhD work, the staff of our department continues to study the phenomenon and receives results that, in my opinion, need to be discussed and reported in scientific communities. These results made it possible to introduce this quality control method into the production line of a large pharmaceutical company, as well as into one of the research centers of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, as a control of the quality characteristics of immunobiological preparations.

"Best Oral Presentation" award winner

When evaluating the reports, the jury relied on the following criteria:

  1. The age of the speaker is up to 35 years, which corresponds to a young scientist.
  2. A promising direction from the point of view of practical application of the research results.
  3. Compliance with the topic of the conference "Physics of Aqueous Solutions".

Gleb Petrov's research meets all the criteria. And since the conference was organized by the governing staff of the Prokhorov General Physics Institute of the Academy of Sciences, the report was received with a lively response from physicists and staff of the Academy.

The conference is a unique platform for scientists from various universities, research institutes, cities and even countries to interact. This is an opportunity not only to share your experience, but also to gain new knowledge. The scale and uniqueness of the event, as well as the impressive results of the scientific work of outstanding scientists, left me with a deep impression.

"Investigation of the properties of pharmaceutical substances of zinc sulfate using infrared spectrometry: qualitative and quantitative analysis"

There is no section in the regulatory documents devoted to the quantitative determination of water content in inorganic medicines using infrared spectrometry. In this regard, Elizaveta Kuzmenko has developed a new methodology for performing quantitative analysis.

IR spectrometry (infrared spectrometry) is an analysis method that is used to study molecules and their structures. It is based on the interaction of infrared light with matter: molecules absorb light at certain wavelengths, which makes it possible to determine their composition and functional groups. The method is widely used in chemistry, biology, and pharmacy to identify substances and study their properties. Infrared spectrometry can be used to quantify a substance due to the fact that the absorption of light in certain wavelength ranges is related to the concentration of the analyzed component.

We obtained the spectra of the substances and, using chemometric processing, determined the water content in zinc sulfate hydrates and distinguished the quality of the substances among themselves. Chemometrics is a common and relevant approach now — it is a science that uses mathematical and statistical methods to analyze chemical data.

“Best Poster” award winner

IR spectrometry has a non-destructive character, which allows you to save samples, as well as quickly and efficiently analyze them. This method is highly accurate and provides information about the molecular structure of substances.

Special attention is paid to zinc, an essential trace element that plays an important role in maintaining the immune system, wound healing, and proper metabolism. All of the above makes zinc a key component in the development of drugs aimed at improving health and preventing diseases.

The new technique developed by Elizaveta Kuzmenko, which is not included in the state pharmacopoeia, opens up the possibility for quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical substances of various origins using a non-destructive method. This allows you to quickly and accurately obtain results, which makes it promising for use in pharmaceutical practice. Thus, the research is promising from the point of view of practical application, which is one of the main criteria for evaluating reports by the jury members.

Making a poster presentation at the conference "Physics of Aqueous Solutions" was an important and unforgettable experience. The support and attention from academics, scientists, and even junior colleagues inspired me to continue researching and developing my ideas.
