In 1970, the Academy of Sciences of the USSR organized the Institute of Agrochemistry and Soil Science in Pushchino with the aim of developing studies of soils and their functions in the biosphere, recognizing the global nature of the environmental crisis. Currently, the Institute is engaged in studying physicochemical and biological processes of soil formation, issues of spatio-temporal soil organization.
In 2016, on the basis of the Department of Landscape Design and Sustainable Ecosystems of the Agrarian and Technological Institute, RUDN University, the Center for Mathematical Modeling and Design of Sustainable Ecosystems was opened. It cooperates with many specialized organizations, one of the leading places in the list of which is held by the Institute of Physics and Technology, the Russian Academy of Sciences. The center is engaged in analyzing the parameters of sustainable development of urban ecosystems in the European part of Russia: from local monitoring to regional modeling. In addition, the Institute of Physics and Technology, the Russian Academy of Sciences, is one of the main bases for the practical training of the RUDN Ecological Faculty.
