Profession

A linguist is a specialist in foreign languages who is well-acquainted with the principles of practical and theoretical linguistics and knows the way people learn languages. A linguist is well-acquainted with regional and social variations of languages and methods of communication. Translation and interpreting are spheres in which a linguist is a professional. Within the frame of this programme a student gets education in two countries – Russia (Moscow) and Great Britain (Edinburgh) at two universities: RUDN University and the Edinburgh Napier University. In case a student passes all the assessments successfully, writes a thesis successfully twice: in Moscow and in Edinburgh, a student receives two Bachelor’s degrees — of Russian Federation and of Great Britain.


Educational Process

In the first year a student takes two semester course of the English language practice. This course introduces a student to the principles of the English grammar practice, helps to improve pronunciation skills, enlarges student’s English vocabulary. Simultaneously a student gets acquainted with the basis of intercultural communication. At the same time a student obtains knowledge of such important Humanities as Philosophy, History, Culture Studies, Sociology Economics, Law, Management and others. Theoretical bases of linguistics are taught in the second year as well as theory and practice of translation and interpreting. In the second year a student chooses one more foreign language to learn.
The third year is spent in Great Britain — the Edinburgh Napier University, where languages, management, intercultural communication, history, geography, culture and literature of Scotland are taught. In their fourth year students come back to Moscow to continue their studies at RUDN University – Institute of Foreign Languages. At this period they obtain practical skills in professional area and write Bachelor’s papers under the supervision and guidance of experienced academicians. Having passed all the assessments and having defended the Bachelor’s papers successfully, they receive two BA degrees: one in Russia and the other in Great Britain.


Practice

Practical studies of two foreign languages: listening, speaking, reading, writing, translating is the essence of the whole teaching process at this programme. At the same time such modern interactive methods as round-table discussion, interviewing, questionnaire survey, role play and distant intercultural communication are widely used. Students are involved in other internship activities: case study, business games, project work. The eighth semester is devoted to the practical activity in different business and academic structures in language-related areas.


Career

The graduates of the programme are highly demanded by headhunters. Graduates having international experience of studying in Russian and British higher educational institutions easily find jobs in business and administrative institutions, offices and companies, international corporations, cultural, congress and exhibition centers, municipal and state structures, embassies. And this is not the complete list of positions they can get.
