Profession

The RUDN University Department of Theory and History of International Relations trains future diplomatic staff. Diplomats — employees of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and missions abroad — represent the interests of the state. A diplomat participates in official visits, negotiations and conferences, draws up and signs agreements. This job is traditionally considered as one of the most prestigious, interesting and highly paid. A diplomat is simultaneously an economist, political scientist, historian, expert in culture studies and journalist who is able to clearly express their thoughts and broadcast them through the media. A diplomatic official must have erudition, charm, tact, ability to win people over, adapt and be calm in any situation. And of course, they need to know several languages. This job implies a high degree of responsibility for actions: a diplomat, like a doctor, must not make mistakes. If a doctor makes a mistake, a person will die; if a diplomat makes a mistake, thousands and millions of people may die.

Educational Process

During training students acquire advanced knowledge of general problems of modern global politics, international security, management of world processes, and skills in applied analytics of an international political profile taking into account the needs of both government bodies and representatives of the private economic sector engaged in international activities. The programme attaches particular attention to English, without which it is unthinkable today to study primary sources and integrate into world science.

Practice

Internships take place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Rossotrudnichestvo, Rosmolodezh, Rosсosmos, Rosatom, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, UN Information Centre, representative offices of the President of the Russian Federation, embassies and missions of the CIS and non-CIS countries in the Russian Federation, research centres, etc.
