A political scientist is a specialist who studies all spheres of life related to politics. In Russia, this field of study arose in higher education only at the end of the 20th century, so the profession is considered quite young, and young specialists are in demand in many areas. A broad outlook allows them to work in a variety of areas. Many political scientists find employment in journalism, science, companies developing various political technologies, public service.
Educational Process
An intensive training programme involves mandatory study of theoretical, methodological and applied disciplines, and also provides an opportunity to induvidually select courses which are more in line with the student's professional interests.
The first three terms are focused on master’s research work, as well as intensive learning process within the framework of the delivered courses and scientific events. The fourth, final term is devoted to a pre-degree internship, as well as independent writing of a master’s thesis under the academic supervision of the teaching staff of the RUDN University Department of Comparative Political Science.
Master’s theses are defended in Russian and English.
Practice
Discussions on the most topical issues of Russian and world politics, master classes from leading Russian and foreign political scientists, participating in the most prestigious scientific events in Russia, as well as preparing own events of various formats (from round tables to international political science conferences) — all this generates interest in the profession, forms all the skills and competencies necessary for conducting professional activities among master’s students mastering the programme.
Every year, master’s students complete their pre-degree internships in government bodies of the Russian Federation, international organizations, research and analytical centres, consulting companies, media and information and analytical agencies, international companies.
Career
The career of a political scientist is not just a job, but a way of life: they continuously study the events which take place in the world, make forecasts and analyze the political situation on their basis, participate in various conferences, give interviews to journalists, publish materials in socio-political and scientific media.
After completing the programme, graduates will apply their knowledge and interests — either in research and teaching activities, find employment in think tanks or leading Russian and foreign media, public service, private consulting or working in the interests of large business.
