A political scientist is a specialist who studies all spheres of life related to politics. In Russia, this field of study arose in higher education only at the end of the 20th century, so the profession is considered quite young, and young specialists are in demand in many areas. A broad outlook allows them to work in a variety of areas. Many political scientists find employment in public service, international organizations, journalism, scientific and educational activities, companies developing various political technologies, etc.
Educational Process
The learning process is carried out in Russian and English at RUDN University for two years. An intensive training programme involves mandatory study of theoretical, methodological and applied disciplines, and masters are given the opportunity to independently choose courses that are more in line with the student's professional interests.
The first three terms focus on masters' research work, as well as on an intensive learning process within the framework of courses and scientific events. The final, fourth, term is devoted to a pre-degree internship, as well as independent writing of a graduation thesis under the academic supervision of the teaching stuff of the RUDN University Department of Comparative Political Science.
Master’s theses are defended in Russian and English with the participation of leading researchers in political science.
Practice
Discussions on the most topical issues of Russian and world politics, master classes from leading Russian and foreign political scientists, participation in the most prestigious scientific events in Russia, as well as preparing own events (from the format of “round tables” to international political science conferences) generate interest in deep immersion in the profession, form all the necessary skills and competencies among master’s students enrolled in the programme.
The master’s programme is implemented in close cooperation with employers. Every year master’s students complete their pre-degree internship in government bodies of the Russian Federation, political parties, international organizations, research and analytical centres, consulting companies, media and information and analytical agencies, international companies. Practical training under the Political Problems of Globalizing World programme not only forms the skills and competencies necessary for further professional activity, but also gives a deep understanding of the possibilities of applying the acquired theoretical knowledge in practice.
Career
The career of a political scientist is a way of life, and not just a job, as they study the events which take place in the world all the time, make forecasts and analyze the political situation on their basis, participate in various conferences, give interviews to journalists, publish their materials in socio-political and scientific media.
The acquired fundamental knowledge in political science and practical skills and competencies allow graduates of the programme in Political Problems of Globalizing World to successfully fulfil themselves in such areas of professional activity as analytics and political technologies, science and research, public administration, public or party activities, political journalism, political consulting, work in the interests of big business.
In addition to building a successful career, master’s graduates can continue their studies and research under the postgraduate programme in Political Science and Regional Studies.
