Profession
Physicists are investigating objects of the surrounding world and laws of its interaction. They work on a broad variety of problems: from subatomic particles to the Universe behavior. Objects are viewed as physical bodies, their interaction – as physical phenomena. Properties and behavior of physical objects are studied through experiments. Physical phenomena research offers an opportunity of discovering general laws, describing fundamental properties of the surrounding world, creating mathematical models of such, and use all of the above in the name of progress.
It is crucial for a physicist to be observant and curious, perseverant and striving to learn, patient and capable of critical thinking, have propensity for experiment, interest in nature and ability to incorporate creativity in science.
Educational Process
Educational process comprises fundamental university training, including basic disciplines of mathematics and science, practical physics, and studying several special disciplines of general and theoretical physics, defining a possible educational direction and professional specialization.
During the first two years students are studying all branches of general physics and the complete course of mathematic subjects, such as “Mathematical analysis”, “Algebra and Analytic Geometry”, “Differential Equations”, “Equations of Mathematical Physics’, “Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics”, “Computational Physics”, “Numerical Methods and Mathematical Modeling”.
After that, students can choose their major: plasma physics, applied physics and physical informatics, radiophysics and electronics. Another option could be a specialization in the field of contemporary theoretical physics, including the following branches: statistical and nuclear physics, particle physics, theory of gravity and astrophysics, continuum mechanics and biophysics.
Much time is dedicated to research work, contribution to scientific seminars and conferences.
Practice
The third year students do exploratory internship in National Research Centre “Kurchatov Institute” and science laboratories and centers of the Research Institute of Physics and Technology. Syllabus also provides research work and practice that contributes to development and retention of specialized professional competences, as well as includes compulsory involvement in academic work, completion and defense of interdisciplinary coursework on topics of basic disciplines, as well as participation in science work for the student science community. Workshops by leading experts and employers’ representatives of real economy, Russian and foreign scientists of leading universities and scientific centers are being held annually.
Career
Physicists are teaching in schools and higher education institutions, working in research institutes, joint ventures and offices of international companies associated with exploitation, support and implementation of physical tools and devices. Many physicists are in demand in research departments of large companies – local and international, also, where physical methods of research and technologies are needed.
