Profession

The key areas of professional activities of a postgraduate specialized in Mathematics and Mechanics are research and mathematical modeling, communication, information and communication technologies in the fields of software development and testing, creation, support and administration of information and communication systems, as well as general, professional and additional training. Graduates are distinguished by social mobility, competitiveness and stability in modern labor market, are capable of doing innovative activities in science, education and management. Postgraduates are in demand in all organizations and departments where computer technologies are used. They can be engaged in research activities and are capable of solving current problems of fundamental and applied mathematics, improving and implementing new mathematical methods for solving applied problems.

Educational Process

The postgraduate program aims to form modern knowledge in solving theoretical and applied problems, to form students' skills of independent research and teaching activities. The mandatory part of the program includes fundamental training in mathematics, the study of modern mathematical methods and active research work.
The course consists of a set of subjects of the basic block, mandatory for mastering, and a set of electives. In the first two years, students study the following set of disciplines: “Foreign language”, “History and Philosophy of Science”, “Higher School Pedagogics”, “Methodology of scientific research”, “Boundary value problems for differential equations”, “Theory of extreme problems”.
The third and fourth years are mostly devoted to student’s research work, researchers’ teamwork and writing a PhD thesis. All educational activities and scientific research are conducted in multimedia classrooms and scientific and educational laboratories and centers of the S.M. Nikol’sky Mathematical Institute, as well as in computer classrooms equipped with modern facilities and software for conducting computational experiments.

Practice

The curriculum provides for research and pedagogical internships, which are conducted on the basis of the V. A. Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the S.M. Nikol’sky Mathematical Institute at RUDN University.
Master classes of leading experts and representatives of employers of real sectors of economy, Russian and foreign scientists from leading universities and research centers are annually held for graduate students. There are scientific seminars on functional analysis and theory of functions (headed by V. I. Burenkov and M. L. Goldman), as well as on the theory of extreme problems and optimization methods with application to mathematical economics (headed by A.V. Arutyunov, V. I. Burenkov, V. N. Rozova, N. G. Pavlova), which are attended by major Russian and foreign mathematicians, teachers, students, postgraduates and doctoral students. The Mathematical Institute named after Academician S.M. Nikolsky closely cooperates with the Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology.

Career

The acquired knowledge and practical skills allow graduates to work in education, science, finance and industry, investment funds as software analysts, researchers, developers of mathematical models for processes, consultants in mathematical modeling, database administrators, teachers of mathematics and computer science. Graduates can also carry out professional activities in other fields in accordance with the acquired competencies and are able to work in an interdisciplinary team.
