Profession

Orthopedic surgeon specializes in musculo-skeletal disorders and trauma of a fairly broad profile due to the need to combine knowledge about the traumatic pathology of the musculoskeletal system and orthopedic consequences of diseases. At the moment, a two-year residency allows you to create a theoretical and practical basis for further work and improvement of knowledge in such major sections as:
1. Acute trauma care for adults
2. Acute trauma care for children
3. Joint arthroplasty
4. Prostetics and orthosis
5. Hand surgery
6. Microsurgery and reconstructive surgery
7. Arthroscopy of large and small joints
8. Vertebrology
9. Chest deformities
10. Reumatology
11. Surgical correction of limb deformities.
12. Complications of fractures and operative treatment: non-unions.
13. Infection in orthopedics.


Educational Process

The main purpose of the 2year residency is to teach patient management, rules and methods of orthopedic examination and diagnostics, medical documentation writing, implementation of the treatment process in accordance with the normative documents of the Ministry of Health, emergency trauma care, introduction to operative orthopedics. Traditionally, the educational process includes a theoretical lecture course, conducted by professors of the Department. Students are provided with educational materials in electronic format.


Practice

During first academic year, residents are sent to practice in trauma departments and study acute trauma care, then for 2 years they are sent for cycles of six months to orthopedic departments, where they study arthroplasty, arthroscopy and surgery of limb deformities. Within 2 years, rotations to the departments of hand surgery and vertebrology are possible, as well as more rare special departments for in-depth study of these disciplines at the request of the patient. On clinical bases, professors and associate professors of the Department conduct seminars and clinical lectures.


Career

Graduates of the program are able to get employment in trauma centers, public hospitals, private clinics, medical schools, higher educational institutions of medical specialization, scientific organizations, clinics, and diagnostic centers.
