Profession

Postgraduate programme 08.00.14 “World Economics” is the third stage in the acquisition of the profession of international economist. A postgraduate student who has successfully completed their studies can engage in teaching, research, analytical, managerial, entrepreneurial activities, be a well qualified, versatile professional in all areas of specialisation in economics and management in accordance with their career choice.
Graduates of postgraduate profile “World economy” can carry out several types of professional activity at once:
— conduct research on world economy and international economic relations;
— teach global economics, international economic relations and related disciplines at institutions of higher professional education;
— deal with international economic activities in financial and non-financial companies (foreign trade, international finance, etc.);
— manage structural subdivisions and companies with foreign business in general, design and develop international business projects;
— operate in the state authorities, supranational authorities of integration associations, representing the country in international and regional economic organisations;
— carry out high level analytical and consulting work, expert work, media work, and other activities;
— use knowledge of foreign languages and understanding of global economic processes, be able to think broadly, build strategy and tactics of economic activity.


Educational Process

The educational programme of scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel of higher qualification (postgraduate studies) in the field of 38.06.01 “Economics” profile (speciality) 08.00.14 “World Economy” is aimed at acquisition of analytical, research, pedagogical, managerial and organizational skills by the student.
As a part of the curriculum an individual plan of a postgraduate student is formed to give students the opportunity for step-by-step completion of postgraduate education, which includes successful passing of the Candidacy examinations in philosophy, foreign language, speciality (world economy), providing the required number of scientific publications, development of the thesis and passing PhD defense for the degree of Candidate of Sciences in Economics.
The courses studied at the postgraduate level include:
— History and Philosophy of Science; Foreign Language; Modern Economic Theory (courses required for the PhD);
— Pedagogy of Higher Education; Research Methodology (courses common to the field of “Economics”, which are basic for economists, researchers and teachers of higher education);
— World Economy; International Integration Processes; National Security (specialized courses, necessary for the Candidacy examinations in the specialty (“World Economy”), for carrying out scientific researches on the topic of the dissertation).
The educational process also includes obligatory pedagogical and research practice, scientific research, which should result in a thesis to be prepared for the degree of candidate of economic sciences, held a preliminary defense at the graduating department and the subsequent defense in the profile Thesis Board.
At the end of their studies, postgraduate students pass the State Final Examination. Upon successful completion of the study programme and the State Final Examination, postgraduate students receive a state diploma with the qualification of “Researcher. Researcher-teacher”.


Practice

During the education period, graduate students undergo two types of internship: pedagogical internship and research internship.
Pedagogical internship is aimed at the formation of pedagogical skills and the acquisition of the necessary competencies of a higher school lecturer. During pedagogical internship, graduate students attend lectures, seminars and other types of classes, held by their research advisor and other specialists of the faculty of the department, help them in developing theoretical and practical material for teaching courses, conduct seminars and course work, independently develop their own special courses, master classes and conduct classes for students of the Faculty of Economics of the RUDN University and partner universities. To the greatest extent, graduate students of the 08.00.14 “World Economy” specialty master the teaching of bachelor’s degree courses under the program “International Economic Relations and Foreign Economic Activity” and master’s degree programs “International Trade” and “International Logistics”, implemented by the Department of International Economic Relations of the RUDN University.
The research internship is aimed at developing the analytical and research abilities of graduate students, developing graduate students' skills in conducting scientific research, preparing and publishing scientific articles in cited authoritative journals (RSCI, HAC, Scopus, WoS, etc.), other scientific publications, public speaking skills and defending the results of their research work in Russian and international scientific and practical conferences, as well as the skills of professional communication in the scientific community.


Career

PhD graduates are successfully employed in a variety of specialisations, for example:
— production economists can coordinate the workload of individual departments, plan production, record balances, and calculate the amount of raw materials needed for production;
— payroll and labour economists develop incentive programs, calculate productivity, pay piece-rate employees, and check bonuses and bonuses;
— cost and pricing economists calculate the cost of production, identify the components that have the strongest impact on costs, ways to reduce costs, and analyse supplier prices;
— economic analysts can evaluate the potential profitability of new projects, as well as the financial and other performance of the business as a whole.
The general economics major provides a broad set of knowledge and skills which enables the graduate to master the specifics of a particular line of business and to acquire professional skills in a short period of time. The places of work for graduates of the general economics profile usually include:
— economic, financial, marketing, production and analytical services;
— organisations of different sectors, areas and forms of ownership;
— financial, credit and insurance institutions;
— state and municipal authorities;
— academic and departmental research organisations.
If there is an indication of a future place of work or a preferred nature of activity, students should be advised after the second year to change the general economics profile to a specialised one for specific employment prospects.
