Why Chinese is the key to a successful career: graduates of RUDN Translator programs are beyond competition

Why does an ecologist or marketer need Chinese? What specialists do modern employers need? RUDN University environmental students studying under the “Translator” program attended a master class where they learned about the benefits of learning the Chinese language.

“The demand for specialists who know Chinese is growing rapidly. Managers, logisticians, marketers, analysts and many others are involved in implementing economic ideas. Knowledge of the language is a competitive advantage in employment. On average, the salary of specialists with Chinese is 50–60% higher than the salary of specialists without Chinese.

China is the largest consumer market in the world, as well as one of the main regions for the development of e-commerce. In 2021, China’s share in Russian foreign trade turnover was about 18%. In the first quarter of 2022, trade turnover between the two countries increased by 28.7%, while the indicators will keep increasing. Consequently, the demand for specialists with Chinese will also grow. Computer translators are not very good at Chinese yet. At the same time, in 10 years, 46% of engineering documentation will be in Chinese,” Maxim Fedotov, senior lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages and Intercultural Communication at the Financial University under the Government of Russia.

What kind of specialists with the knowledge of Chinese do large Russian companies need?

  • Technological engineers who can “read” drawings and explain technical details to Chinese partners.
  • Purchasing managers and project managers with experience in purchasing technologically complex products.
  • Analysts, marketers, product managers who can conduct marketing analysis of the Chinese market.
  • Marketers, managers who know how to work with Chinese marketplaces and social networks.

“Now Chinese is not very common among environmental specialists, but soon, as forecasts show, everything will change. The development of relations with China opens up new opportunities for international cooperation. Environmental problems unite countries all over the world. By the way, when I started learning Chinese, the language seemed more difficult to me. Now getting acquainted with the Chinese writing system is a pleasure, because it is very different from the alphabet we are used to. Hieroglyphs seem beautiful and a little mysterious, especially when you don’t know what they mean,” Valeria Karaseva, 1st year student.

“I have long thought about what is more important: to speak a language well or to be a pro in your specialty. Fortunately, the Translator program allows you to combine both. Now I know that it is important not only to know the language, but also your business,” Konstantin Fedorov, 3rd year student.

“I like the culture of China, traditions, architecture and people... The language is very interesting to study, although it is quite complicated. For example, it is difficult to remember the spelling of hieroglyphs and pinyin, a system for transmitting non-Latin writing using the extended Latin alphabet. At the same time, knowledge of the language allows you to get acquainted with information in different sources, clarify and verify it. Languages allow expanding the range of literature that can be used. This is important in any business!” Anastasia Kim, 1st year student.
