Participating in the competition was a very rewarding opportunity to try my hand at legal translation and put all my knowledge into practice, which inspired me to continue to improve my English skills and participate in various competitions.

Daria Lyashchenko (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 4th year)

These results of the competition for me are an indicator of the great work not only on my part, but also on the part of the teachers of the Department of Foreign Languages of the Law Institute. I am grateful that I have the opportunity to participate in such competitions and represent RUDN.

Rafael Komiljonov (Master’s Course in Civil Law, Family Law, Business Law, International Private Law, 1st year)

Participation in the All-Russian Student Contest on Scientific Text Translation is a valuable experience for any «hungry for knowledge» lawyer. The depth and originality of scientific thought, the use of specific legal vocabulary, the originality of topics are the features of scientific texts submitted for translation at the competition. I express special gratitude to my supervisor, Vladimir Ivanovich Ozyumenko, whose constant support and invaluable advice helped to achieve victory.

Among the 1st place winners of the translation contest from German into Russian there are bachelor’s students:

  • Valery Mgeladze (3rd year, nomination «International Law»);

Valeria Mgeladze (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 3rd year)

I liked the format of the Olympiad, because it was possible to choose the area of interest in Jurisprudence in order to translate. My choice fell on the text «International Law», at the moment this is the most interesting topic for me. The text was informative, reflecting the historical period in the development of international law, the basic principles of international law (jus cogens) and current issues in international criminal law. I hope that next year there will be another such Olympiad.

Margarita Vershkova (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 4th year)

I was very glad to take part in this competition. I would like to note that the topics of the texts and vocabulary were chosen very competently. It was convenient to translate the selected text, since the materials were identical to those used in the seminars of our teacher Irina Kruse. In addition, the competition allowed students to assess their own level. Thank you for organizing and hosting the competition!

Ksenia Peregudova (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 4th year)

In the process of translating a text on the subject of civil procedure, interesting nuances arose that required deep reflection and a more detailed study of the topic. I gained new knowledge in the field of civil procedure in Germany and applied translation skills in practice. I want to express my deep gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the competition to the organizers and my teacher of German Irina Kruse!

A number of winners also got prizes in other nominations. Thus, Darya Lyashenko was awarded the 2nd place in the nominations «Civil Law» and «Family Law», and Rafael Komiljonov, in the nominations «Civil Law» and «Jurisprudence».

Law Institute students also were awarded 2nd and 3rd places in the competition for translation from English into Russian. The list of awardees includes:

  • Alexander Shmelev (2nd year, nomination «Civil Law», 3rd place);
  • Irina Mezentseva (2nd year, nomination «Intellectual Property», 2nd place);
  • Valentina Marushina (4th year, nomination «Constitutional law», 3rd place);
  • Sofia Dzheniya(2nd year, nomination «International law», 2nd place);
  • Ekaterina Kokorina (2nd year, nomination «International law», 3rd place).

Sofia Dzheniya (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 2nd year)

Translation competitions are a great opportunity for everyone to try their hand at real translation work and gain experience. And in this regard, I took part in the lll All-Russian competition for the translation of a scientific text from English in the field of International Law. I have loved learning English since my childhood. This competition, among other things, showed that I was not mistaken in choosing English to study, and I am ready to continue moving in this direction! The translation of a scientific text is not so easy, but I successfully coped with this task. I would like to express my deep gratitude to the organizers of this competition, as well as to my teacher of English Vladimir Ivanovich Ozyumenko.

Ekaterina Kokorina (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 2nd year)

I was pleased to take part in the III All-Russian competition for the translation of a scientific text from English in the filed of International Law. The translation of a scientific text is not an easy task, but I succeeded. I will continue to develop my skills in this field in order to achieve even greater success. I would like to express my gratitude to the organizers, as well as to my teacher of English Vladimir Ivanovich Ozyumenko.

Ulyana Kostyleva (3rd year) took 2nd place in the nomination «Civil Law» and 3rd place in the nomination «Jurisprudence» in the contests on the translation from German into Russian.

Ulyana Kostyleva (Bachelor’s Course in Jurisprudence, Qualification Course in Legal Translation and Interpreting, 3rd year)

It was very interesting to try my hand at translating texts on various legal topics. Translation practice outside usual academic activities is a very useful switch, it helps to expand the existing stock of knowledge. I was pleased with the simplicity, accessibility and convenience of participation: two weeks were given to complete the tasks, the organizers answered all messages very promptly and were always in touch. I would love to participate next year!

The RUDN University delivers congratulations to the students and their teachers, i.e., associate professors Nadezhda Kalmazova, Vladimir Ozyumenko, Valentina Stepanova (English), Irina Kruse (German).

Nadezhda Kalmazova, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, RUDN Law Institute Department of Foreign Languages

The All-Russian Interuniversity Competition on Specialized Translation is both an assessment of the quality of student training and an opportunity to apply the acquired knowledge by the students themselves. It’s great that such wonderful traditions exist!

Anastasia Atabekova, RUDN University Vice-Rector for Multilingual Development, Dr. Sc. in Comparative Linguistics, Full Professor, legal translator

The participation in «external» student competitions for translation in the field of a future specialty has already become an enduring tradition at RUDN University. Learners of different faculties who are also students of the qualification course in specialized translation & interpreting for faculty respective specialties, traditionally and successfully represent RUDN University in such competitions. Through the engagement in such contests RUDN students gain very important experience in interlingual professionally-oriented communication in real contexts of future professional activities. Moreover, it is also important that teachers who train students for such competitions, are practicing translators, and not just specialists in the field of a foreign language and its teaching methods.

I express my deepest gratitude to both students and teachers for their commitment to the translation profession.
