An international scientific seminar “Sustainable Agriculture: Prospects for Plant Breeding” will be held on the basis of the Agrobiotechnological Department of the Agricultural and Technological Institute, RUDN University.

Plant breeding is an important factor in increasing productivity and product quality, and developing sustainable agriculture. The upcoming seminar will consider modern possibilities for creating new breeding lines, highlight problems of breeding potatoes and chickpeas, and address issues of seed production.

The main goal of the seminar is to introduce students, graduate students and employees of RUDN University and KazATU to the latest achievements in the field of plant breeding.

Event co-organizer: Kazakh Agrotechnical Research University named after. S. Seifullin, Astana, Kazakhstan.

(KazATU) is the largest agricultural university in Central and Northern Kazakhstan, the first higher educational institution in Astana. University faculty carries out the latest research in the field of monitoring diseases and pests of agricultural plants, breeding and plant protection.

Speakers

  • Gulmira Khasanova — lecturer at the Department of Agriculture and Plant Growing at KazATU.
“Simple SNP genotyping methods to create new high protein chickpea breeding lines.”
The presentation is devoted to an overview of the state of selection and prospects for the production of leguminous crops in the climatic conditions of Northern Kazakhstan and its growing influence on world trade volumes. Information is provided on the number of samples of lentils and chickpeas in Seifullin KATIU and the main results of scientific research carried out in the period from 2016 to 2024. The presentation highlights aspects of the introduction of modern molecular biotechnologies into agriculture, emphasizing the need to improve traditional breeding methods to increase economic efficiency.
  • Zenon Stashevski — leading researcher at the TatNIISH Federal Research Center of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Kazan, Russia.
“Selection and seed production of potatoes in the Republic of Tatarstan.”
The report highlights the breeding program of the Kazan Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, aimed at obtaining highly productive potato varieties in the conditions of the Middle Volga region. The secrets of creating potato varieties that produce high yields during a short growing season with elevated temperatures and can easily withstand drought and soil compaction will be revealed. The speaker gives examples of varieties whose yield reaches 90 tonnes/hectare.
