Professor Kirabaev and Professor Skubachevsky received the prize in the field of science and innovation

The annual award in the field of science and innovation is the highest recognition of scientific merits to the University. The award for 2023 was presented to Nur Serikovich Kirabaev, Doctor of Philosophy, and Alexander Leonidovich Skubachevsky, Doctor of Physics and Mathematics.

We asked about the latest research, why it is worth doing science at RUDN and what path a young scientist should follow to be successful.

“The main topic of my publications is related to the study of the philosophical heritage of the outstanding polymath of the Muslim Middle Ages Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali, as well as research in the field of philosophical comparative studies: the ancient heritage in the philosophical traditions of the medieval Arab East and Byzantium.

What advice can be given to young researchers? To be aspiring, ambitious and strive for a great goal, but not to be a conceited person. The ability to listen and hear others. Always remember, science is, first of all, work, not positions, fame and honors. A good scientist never stops learning. Science is constantly changing, and you should keep up with the times.

Among the qualities of a good scientist should be self-discipline, self-confidence, but not overconfidence, curiosity and perseverance, patience. And I would point out, sociability, because diversity is important in science. Today, scientists from different cultural traditions collaborate to achieve. Truth is born from the juxtaposition of diverse perspectives offered by scientists. A researcher should not be a loner, for to succeed in a scientific career, it is important to cooperate with colleagues”, - Nur Kirabaev. Lecturer, Assoc. Prof., Professor, Head of the History of Philosophy Department, RUDN.

“My recent works are devoted to the study of mixed problems for the Vlasov-Poisson equations. These problems describe the kinetics of a high-temperature plasma in a magnetic trap. The results obtained allow us to estimate the magnitude of the external magnetic field, which ensures the retention of high-temperature plasma at a given distance from the wall of the vacuum chamber of the reactor. In my opinion, science should be practiced by those for whom it is a way and meaning of existence. It is worth doing science in our country because we have a solid heritage of the Soviet past. Back then, outstanding scientists created world-class scientific schools in a short period of time. In addition, scientists in the field of pure mathematics, for the most part, were also engaged in applied problems. Therefore, we have a basis for further development.

It is at the RUDN that it is worth doing science, because not only the scientists and students have a desire to do it, but also the Rectorate pays attention to this activity. Often it is the Rectorate that initiates the encouragement of those areas of scientific activity that turn out to be promising. In addition, the university provides opportunities for the employee to create and strengthen scientific ties at the international level”, - Alexander Skubachevsky, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Scientific Director of the Academician S.M. Nikolsky Mathematical Institute of the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Applicants for the award are evaluated according to several criteria:

  • availability of publications in journals indexed in the Russian Science Citation Index database and/or VAK list of the first quartile;
  • availability of publications in scientific editions indexed in the Web of Science/Scopus database;
  • availability of author's monograph/chapter in monograph/textbook;
  • number of citations of scientific articles in Web of Science/Scopus;
  • attracting at least RUB 1 mln in external funding to RUDN.

RUDN honorary badges for merits in the field of science and innovations were awarded on February 12, 2024 in a solemn atmosphere at the extended meeting of the Academic Council dedicated to the Day of Science.

RUDN University scientist: Africa relies on small modular reactors to solve energy problems

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electricity consumption in Africa has increased by more than 100% over the past two years (2020-2022). However, 74.9% of this energy is still produced by burning organic fuels — natural gas, coal and oil. At the same time, the level of electrification on the continent remains extremely low — only 24%, while in other developing countries it reaches 40%. Even in grid-connected areas, electricity supply is often unreliable: industrial enterprises lose energy on an average of 56 days a year.

RUDN dentists developed a program that will accelerate the work of an orthodontist by 40%

Today, diagnosis and treatment planning with orthodontists takes several days. Also, complications can arise during treatment that slow down the patient's recovery process. For example, improper orthodontic treatment planning can lead to temporomandibular joint dysfunction.
