Research

  • Under the guidance of Prof. Varlamov A.V., a new reaction was discovered - the reaction of tandem expansion of five, six and seven-member condensed azoheterocycles under the action of activated alkynes, which allowed the creation of original methods for the synthesis of previously undiscovered heterocycles, among which a new class of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors was found. They can serve as a basis for the search for drugs against the Alzheimer's disease.
  • The studies conducted under the supervision of Alexei Varlamov have been repeatedly supported by the grants from the Russian Foundation for Fundamental Research. The received original results have been published in highly rated foreign and Russian journals. About 350 scientific works have been published, including 220 articles and 25 copyright certificates and patents.
  • Prof. Varlamov A.V. has been awarded with the Golden Badge “Laureate” for performing organic synthesis of hererocycles, which was established by International Charity Foundation “Scientific Partnership” and the International Fund “Cultural Heritage”.
  • Prof. Varlamov A.V. has studied the open expansion reaction of tetrahydropyridines and tetrahydroazepines chain under the influence of activated acetylenes, and developed preparative methods for the synthesis of condensed azocines and azonines on its basis;
  • Developed synthetic approaches to the synthesis of isoindoles condensed with a nitrogen-containing heterocycle based on homoallylamines and α-furyl-substituted nitrogen-containing heterocycles.
  • Search for biologically active compounds.
  • Prof. Varlamov A.V. is a member of the Expert Council for Chemistry of the Russian Fond of Fundamental Research; a member of three specialized councils for the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations; member of the editorial board of the journal “Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. Russian Chemical Bulletin”.

Research interests

  • synthesis, stereochemistry and reaction ability of nitrogen heterocycles; biologically active compounds.
  • studying  an open reaction of tetrahydropyridines and tetrahydroazepines chain extension under the influence of activated acetylenes and developing preparative methods of synthesizing condensed azocines and azonines;
  • development of synthesized ways of synthesizing isoindoles condensed with nitrogen heterocycles based on homoallylamines and α-furylsubstituted nitrogen heterocycles.

Summary:

The reaction of easily accessible 3-(furyl)allylamines with a maleic anhydride followed by a domino reaction including stages of acylation/cycloaddition/proton shift, leads to the production of furoisoindoles – aza-analogues of typical sesquiterpenes. The main intramolecular Diels-Adler vinylfuran (IMDAV) reaction was performed in mild conditions with a high level of diastereoselectivity and satisfying yield.
