Profession

Civil Engineering is a cutting-edge industry and an economic engine. During the period of continuous urbanization in the world, the profession of a design engineer remains in demand, and in rapidly changing living conditions, we can say with confidence that this profession will remain relevant at least in the next 20-30 years. Civil engineering structures will always be built as long as human civilization exists! And new conditions and requirements imposed by changing living conditions, along with the emergence of new building materials, technologies, and design tools, only add interest and expand the scope for scientific research and the development of new ambitious projects. Civil engineering and the built environment include almost all objects of urban areas, which allows a specialist to choose his/her own individual path: take part in the development of social projects, improving people's lives, design unique and iconic structures, solve non-standard problems and leave a mark on history, or optimize design processes and increase the reliability of design decisions, and consequently the reliability of buildings and structures. The program provides a choice of two trajectories: with in-depth study of calculation disciplines and disciplines of the organizational block. In accordance with the chosen trajectory, the graduate acquires in-depth skills in the calculation and design of building structures or skills in organizing and managing the design and construction process.
A modern designer and manager of civil engineering and the built environment is proficient in calculation and design software, is familiar with civil engineering codes, rules and recommendations, new building materials and construction technologies, and the basics of programming for solving complex applied engineering problems. Specialists can work both in project teams and in the construction industry, as well as develop the civil engineering industry through relevant scientific research. In any case, in this profession there is scope for inquisitive minds aimed at solving non-standard problems, and for practically oriented people, and for conditional dreamers who are eager to make discoveries and advance construction science, increasing the reliability of buildings and structures and the quality of people’s life.

Educational Process

The program is implemented by leading specialists of the department of Civil Engineering on the basis of modern research laboratories and computer classes.
Training in “Civil Engineering and the Built Environment” is carried out with internships and graduation theses (master’s theses) in collaboration with Russian and foreign enterprises. The program prepares graduates to solve complex problems of building design and engineering design based on foreign norms and regulations, conduct scientific research considering international experience, continue studies in PhD program in English, as well as educate future leaders in Civil Engineering.
General scientific disciplines: students study general scientific disciplines and disciplines of general engineering training: Mathematical Methods of Experimental Data Processing; Mathematical Modelling; Numerical Methods for Civil Engineering; Life Cycle Economics of Buildings; Digital Technologies in Construction; Geoinformation Systems and Applications; Project Management; Problem Solving Techniques in Civil Engineering; BIM-Technology in Construction Management.
Special disciplines: Structural Design in Steel; Structural Design in Reinforced Concrete; Nanotechnology in Civil Engineering; Building materials; Structural Dynamics; Structural Stability; Modelling of Construction Processes; building engineering systems; Applications of Finite Element Method for Civil Engineering Problems; Engineering Systems of Buildings; Geometric Shaping and Analysis of Shells; Optimization Methods in Civil Engineering; Sustainability in Civil Engineering, etc.
Training is conducted exclusively in English and based on foreign civil engineering codes, rules, and recommendations, which provides graduates with professional terminology and design approaches used in the international construction industry and helps them to seamlessly join the team of international companies. For foreign students, the program provides in-depth study of the Russian language in their specialty. Foreign students in the program also have the opportunity (optionally) to attend a number of disciplines in Russian and become familiar with Russian building codes, rules and design methods.

Practice

During the studies, graduates undergo internships in design, development, construction and research organizations, and also communicate with leading experts in the framework of scientific and methodological seminars, open lectures and master classes.
Students of the master's program actively participate in scientific and practical conferences, seminars and exhibitions in the construction industry, and also learn in practice:
- calculation-theoretical and constructive issues of designing buildings and structures;
- methods of mechanics of a deformable solid in the calculations of building structures, fracture mechanics and its applications to assessing the performance of building structures;
- modern methods for calculating structural systems based on discrete and continuum models;
- methods for optimal design of structures;
- problems of reliability and safe operation of buildings and structures;
- basics of civil engineering project management;
- BIM technologies in civil engineering.

Career

As a result of this master’s program, students acquire skills in the field of calculation of building structures and their elements and design of buildings and structures, as well as construction project management. Graduates are able to use modern software systems and BIM technologies to develop construction projects for buildings and structures of varying complexity.
The program is built and updated annually taking into account the demands of modern construction practice to the level of master's training and is interdisciplinary.
Working in design, development, construction and research organizations, masters can occupy leadership positions.
Master's degree graduates of the Civil Engineering and Built Environment program can develop a further career in one of the following areas:
- continuation of studies and scientific work in PhD program in English;
- work in design, development and construction organizations;
- work in research organizations.
