Profession

The profession of a geologist in the field of mining geology is the key to the successful development and optimization of the extraction of mineral resources.
The development of solid mineral deposits plays an important role in many countries, the issues of studying geological factors and parameters (spatial-morphological, volumetric-qualitative, hydrogeological and engineering-geological), which determine the possibility, expediency and conditions for the industrial development of geological objects, are relevant and significant.
The professional scope of activity is diverse: from the creation of three-dimensional models on a computer and the processing of geological, geophysical and hydrogeological information to field work or work in scientific laboratories.
A few attractive characteristics of this profession:
- In-depth knowledge of mining geology: geologists have an analytical view of the geological structure of an area, allowing them to accurately determine the location and characteristics of minerals.
- Precise Research Methods: Using advanced technology and digital solutions, geologists conduct detailed studies, including geophysical, geochemical, and hydrogeological methods, to accurately analyze rock structures.
- Production Optimization: Analysis of geological data enables the development of mining strategies aimed at maximizing mineral yield and reducing costs.
- Risk management: Geologists in mining geology help companies minimize the risks associated with mining by anticipating possible problems and developing appropriate strategies.
- Mining Innovation: Mining geologists are actively implementing innovative technologies to extract resources efficiently and sustainably.
- Sustainability: Geologists are actively involved in the development of mining methods that take into account the principles of sustainable development and minimize environmental impact.
The profession of a geologist in mining geology is not only about ensuring the efficient extraction of resources, but also about a key element of strategic planning for the sustainable development of the mining industry.

Educational Process

The program is being implemented jointly with a partner university (National University of Science and Technology “MISIS”).
The program has an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and contains three training modules, including disciplines and research work, and implemented simultaneously at RUDN University and a partner university:
- “Geological and Geophysical Module” – implemented in the 1st year at RUDN University;
- “Mining Geology Module” – implemented in the 1st year at MISIS;
- “Hydrogeological Module” – implemented in the 2nd year at RUDN University and MISIS.
Preparation and defense of the Final Qualification Work is carried out at RUDN University.
Within two years, the Master's students develop the competencies of a modern geologist (engineer-geologist, engineer-geophysicist, engineer-hydrogeologist, geologist-technician), researcher, and production worker. Students develop skills in complex analysis and digital processing of geological, geophysical, hydrogeological and mining information, acquire skills in independent research and organizational and managerial work.
The main objectives of the training are:
– teach how to navigate in analog and digital geological, geophysical and hydrogeological data;
– to form an understanding and purpose of modern methods of geological, geophysical, hydrogeological, mining research and information processing, as well as to develop skills in their application in solving topical issues of mining geology;
– to develop the ability to navigate in specialized mining and geological programs (Micromine, GEOMIX, ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.) and effectively use their capabilities.
During the training, seminars are held in the format of a round table, presentations and subsequent discussions are organized, situational problems (mini-cases) are solved both individually and in a team.
The key disciplines of the program ensure the formation of the necessary competencies of the graduate and include:
- “Digital Technologies in Geology”;
- “Geological and Geophysical Basics of Mineral Prospecting and Exploration”;
- “Mining Geology”;
- “Sustainable Mining”;
- “Modelling of Mineral Deposits”;
- “Mining Hydrogeology”;
- “Geoinformation Systems for Geology Based on Space Imagery”;
- “Management of Reserves and Quality of Mineral Raw Materials”.

Practice

During their studies, students carry out research work and undergo practical training.
• Research work allows to develop creative and intellectual potential to solve urgent problems of modern geology. Main directions:
- integration of geophysical methods for prospecting for mineral deposits;
- digital modeling of mineral deposits;
- innovative methods of remote sensing (study of satellite images) in geology;
- hydrogeology of ore deposits;
- sustainable development of mining regions;
- management of reserves and quality of mineral raw materials.
• Introductory practice allows you to form skills and experience of working in the field on a real geological object, performing geological and hydrogeological observations, geophysical measurements, as well as taking part in laboratory studies and office data processing.
• Pre-diploma practice is aimed at writing a Final Qualification Work.

Career

Geologists who are able to apply modern methods of processing mining and geological data, work with digital technologies, and solve issues of mining geology are in demand in the labor market.
Graduates who have mastered this program are focused on working in Russian and international companies and research centers specializing in the development of solid mineral deposits, including uranium deposits. For example, Rosatom State Corporation, Uranium One JSC.
