Speaker: Professor Kuksin Sergei B.

Topic: On rigorous one-dimensional versions of two heuristic laws of Kolmogorov’s theory of turbulence.

Kolmogorov’s theory of turbulence contains two famous heuristics relating to the averaging of the second and third powers of fluid velocity field increments u(t,x+r)-u(t,x) for “small but not very small r”. I will explain that these heuristic laws allow strict versions relating to a fictitious one-dimensional fluid described by the Burgers equation. The two obtained one-dimensional laws make it possible to understand the reason for the profound differences between the two corresponding Kolmogorov laws.
