Seminar “Universal and relative in the conceptualization of experience: scheme “placement” (“inner /outer”)”
On 3 November at 16:30 p.m. (Moscow time)
The epistemological concept of the scheme has a long philosophical history: we may discover its roots in Neoplatonism. The scheme is different from both the concept and the percept, but at the same time it can be represented as a specific procedure of the dynamic connection of both. In contemporary cognitive science, schematization is studied at the intersection of different disciplines, such as cognitive linguistics, developmental psychology, kinesics, neurophysiology. The complexity of its study lies not only in the need to work with huge variety of materials, but also in the need to combine various philosophical and methodological perspectives, as well as in the need to take into account materials from different languages and cultures (not only European).
Scientific purpose: to discuss the methodology of applying conceptual schemes as theoretical tools for analysis of experience of thinking and conscience.
In this report, using the example of the “placement” scheme (“internal / external”, cf.: “he entered the house”, “he entered history”, “he came out of a coma”, “the chair is included in the category of objects”, etc.), the real complexity of reconstructing basic cognitive schemes affecting conceptualization of space. The cognitive basis of this “placement” scheme, shall include its representation in Russian and other Indo-European languages, as well as in Mesoamerican languages; moreover we will consider the most typical metaphors, as well as the features of grammaticalization of the corresponding markers. Philosophical examples of its implementation will also be analyzed, and finally, the question of the possibility of identifying the universal and relative in the implementation of scheme will be considered.
Participants: Professors, PhD students and researchers, students and academic staff of RUDN University, Institute of Philosophy of RAS, MSU, RSUH, HSE, St. Petersburg State University, GUAP and PSU.
