Participation in the business program of the XXIII All-Russian Agro-industrial Exhibition "Golden Autumn-2021"

Specialists of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the RUDN University based on the results of participation in the All-Russian Agro-industrial exhibition “Golden Autumn-2021” develop a new direction of cooperation with a partnering research institute the All-Russian Plant Quarantine Center.

On October 8, 2021, the delegation of the Institute of Environmental Engineering visited the XXIII All-Russian Agro-Industrial Exhibition “Golden Autumn 2021” in Patriot Park and took part in the events of the scientific and business program. Specialists of the Institute became participants of the round table “Current trends in agronomy as the basis of crop quality and health. Application of biological plant protection products”, organized by the All-Russian Plant Quarantine Center, a partner of the Institute of Environmental Engineering. Biological means of protection are considered as an effective alternative to the use of pesticides, which means they are one of the steps towards eco-friendly organic agriculture. Speakers of the round table — Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Senior Researcher of the Federal State Budgetary Institution “VNIIKR” I.O. Kamaev and Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Breeding and Seed Growing of the All-Russian Research Institute of Vegetable Growing, Head of the Selection and Primary Seed Growing Service of the Agroholding “Poisk” A.N. Khovrin presented modern developments in the field of biological plant protection. A speaker from the RUDN University, Associate Professor D.O. Kapralova, a representative of the Department of Nature Management, made a report on promising areas of GIS technology development for agriculture — the use of remote methods for the diagnosis of plant crops: phenophases, germination, degree of moisture, stress and phytosanitary status. The use of this innovative method, among other things, allows you to determine the degree of stress in plants that is not noticeable to the naked eye. The report aroused the interest of the audience, it was decided to develop cooperation in this area.

Scientists Reveal the Water Column of the Yamal Lakes Can Be a Microbial Filter

Scientists from the Winogradsky Institute of Microbiology RAS, RUDN University, St. Petersburg State University and the Tyumen Scientific Centre SB RAS studied the microbial communities from several lakes of the Yamal Peninsula. It turned out that methanotrophs (bacteria that use methane as a source of energy) consume methane more actively in the deep mature lakes of the peninsula than in small thermokarst lakes. In this regard, methane emissions into the atmosphere from the surface of deep lakes are low, and only small (relatively younger thermokarst lakes with constitutional ground ice) can make a significant contribution to methane emissions in the north of Western Siberia. Thus, bacteria perform an important function for the climate balance — they reduce the emission of methane into the atmosphere.
