RUDN University Team – the 1st place in the all-russian competitive selection of scientific projects “Technologies for human health”

The team led by Sergey Zyryanov, Head of the Department of General and Clinical Pharmacology, became the winner of the All-Russian competition of scientific projects "Technologies for Human Health".

The main objective of the contest is to provide comprehensive support to research teams creating innovative biotechnologies to promote human health.

143 research teams from more than 50 regions of Russia took part in the contest presenting their research. The examination was conducted by the Russian Academy of Sciences and leading organizations of healthcare. Only 17 of the best works reached the final.

According to the results of the expert examination by the jury, the work "Personalized drug therapy in patients of extreme age groups with polymorbidity" by the RUDN University Department team led by Sergey Zyryanov took 1st place in the nomination "Transition to personalized predictive and preventive medicine".

Elderly and senile patients, as well as premature newborns, are at risk of developing infectious diseases, so treatment approaches require a comprehensive and individualized approach. It is necessary not only to consider the possibility of two or more diseases co-existing in a patient, but also to choose drugs and their optimal dosages with an emphasis on the peculiarities of metabolism in these groups of patients.

The work "Personalized drug therapy in patients of extreme age groups with polymorbidity" presents the results of practical application of data from pharmacokinetic studies of antibacterial drugs in various categories of patients in parallel with the introduction of the Antimicrobial Therapy Control Strategy program, which helps to collect data on pathogenic microorganisms. The authors demonstrate ways to optimize the use of antibacterial drugs from the carbapenem group in patients in the intensive care unit.

For more than 10 years, we have been conducting research on the basis of the pharmacokinetic laboratory to assess the concentration of antibacterial drugs in biological objects, and we use this data to develop algorithms and approaches to improve the effectiveness and safety of antibacterial therapy. To date, we have experience in therapeutic drug monitoring in more than 200 premature newborns and more than 500 adult patients, we determine various antibacterial drugs, their serum levels, and, in addition, a number of anticonvulsants.

The authors have shown the practical importance of a comprehensive method for optimizing antibiotic treatment, as well as for developing local recommendations for the treatment of infections that occur in hospitals.

The results of the study were used in the creation of the federal guidelines "Diagnosis and antimicrobial therapy of infections caused by polyresistant strains of microorganisms" (2022 updated). The developed algorithms for personalizing antibacterial therapy in critically ill patients can be used as the basis for medical decision support systems. The development and subsequent implementation of such systems in the clinical practice of intensive care units will help to increase the efficiency of doctors. This will reduce the burden associated with the need to perform complex calculations to determine the dose of antibiotics.

Based on the data obtained and using modern mathematical approaches and pharmacodynamic, pharmacokinetic modeling, we create population models of pharmacokinetics, which can then be transferred to any medical institution, medical organization and use these models empirically, without returning to the high technologies that we have implemented in our hospital.

Building a sustainable future: what are SDGs and how RUDN helps achieve them

Imagine a world where everyone has enough food, clean water, access to education, and decent work. A world where nature is protected and the future of our planet is cared for. These are the Sustainable Development Goals—to achieve a sustainable future for all! To this end, in 2015, the United Nations (UN) defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a global plan that helps countries and people work together towards a better future. All 193 UN member states have joined the plan.

Unfounded generalizations and false conclusions: RUDN scientists have identified AI “hallucinations” in the diagnosis of mental disorders

Researchers from the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence at RUDN University conducted a large-scale study that revealed systemic errors in large language models (LLMs) when diagnosing depression based on text. This work, carried out in collaboration with colleagues from AIRI, Federal Research Center “Computer Science and Control” of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ivannikov Institute for System Programming of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, and MBZUAI, not only identifies the problem but also lays the foundation for the creation of more reliable and secure tools for detecting depression and anxiety.
