About the event

As part of international cooperation with the universities of Brazil, Sri Lanka and Kazakhstan, scientific seminar “Toward Sustainable Development: Modern Tools and Approaches” will be held on November 23, 2022 at 11.00 Moscow time. The organizers are the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia and Polytechnic School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura, as well as the Department of Management and Engineering in the Field of Environmental Protection of the L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University. The event is held within the framework of the international permanent scientific seminar of the Institute of Ecology " Biosphere sustainability of the countries of the world “.

The scientific seminar is aimed at establishing academic ties, forming international scientific teams as well as creating a dialogue platform for the exchange of modern approaches and developments in the field of environmental protection.

The seminar will bring together leading scientists to discuss a number of issues related to the following important areas:

  • Waste management systems;
  • Renewable energy;
  • Carbon neutrality and ecosystem services;
  • Environmental engineering in construction;
  • Agriculture sustainable development;
  • Human ecology.

Brief information about the co-organizer:

The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro is the largest public university in Brazil. The QS World University Rankings named the University of Rio de Janeiro the best federal university in the country and seventh in Latin America.

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura is one of the largest public universities in Sri Lanka, which was founded in 1958 on the basis of Vidyodya Pirivena, a Buddhist educational center founded in 1873. It is the second oldest university in Sri Lanka and the first university founded after independence.

Today the University stands strong with eight faculties, faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Faculty of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Graduate Studies, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Technology and its latest addition Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. The University is home to over 12,000 Undergraduates, over 1000 postgraduate students. It is considered the largest University in terms of Student Population in Sri Lanka.

The University is also in the forefront of research and innovation with a research council of over 20 research centres and an Invention, Innovation and Venture Creation Council with over 50 Entrepreneurs and stakeholders with over 15 patents.
